TEACHER OF PSYCHOLOGY & BIOLOGY September 2012 Psychology is taught at AS and A2 level only and delivered by one member of staff. Biology is taught from year 7 to A2 level and the department consists of two full-time and one part-time member of staff. Both subjects are popular A level choices and we are looking for someone to join our team who can offer the flexibility to teach across both disciplines. An ability to teach iGCSE (Certificate) Biology is required, although A level Biology teaching is not essential. Psychology and Biology are both departments within the Science Faculty, which also includes Chemistry, Physics and Academic PE. Apart from Academic PE we are located geographically within the same area of the school. Next year there will be 12 academic members of staff in the faculty and support from three technicians and the Faculty Secretary. The Sciences have a successful academic record and are popular within the school. The school moves to a two week time table next year, pupils in years 7 and 8 get six hours of general science over a two week period. Those students who are part of the Specialist Music Scheme at the school will get an hour less at this stage over the same two week rotation. In year 9 we start the teaching AQA iGCSE (Certificate) Sciences. The majority of students will follow Triple Award Separate Science but some will follow the Double Award course. In addition Musicians may opt to drop a science subject in years 10 & 11. Each of the sciences is taught by subject specialists from year 9 onwards wherever possible. Year 9 students spend 7 hours on science over two weeks, which rises to 12 hours in year 11. There is an AS and A2 teaching group in Psychology, with entry typically between 10 and 12 students each year. Biology is usually a two group entry at AS and A2 with numbers typically around 30 to 35 in the lower sixth form. In the sixth form, Psychology candidates study the OCR specification and the Biologists AQA. The vast majority of our students go on to university or Music College. Each year we have a good number of students that go on to Oxbridge Colleges or Russell Group Universities, and therefore ability to stretch and challenge the most able at A level is an important part of our work. Psychology, biology and the other sciences are popular university choices as are engineering, dentistry, medicine and veterinary science. It is probable that the teacher we appoint will teach AS and A level Psychology, General Science in year 7 & 8 as well as AQA iGCSE Biology. The faculty runs many trips, visits and competitions as well as after school clubs, revision workshops and groups such as the Engineering Education Scheme. All members of the academic team are expected to contribute to this programme. We are looking to appoint a lively and passionate communicator to pass on their enthusiasm to our students. You should be an excellent classroom practitioner who really enjoys working with young people. You will join a dynamic, friendly and supportive team and a willingness to contribute as part of this group is essential.
