Phil has just taken over as the principal at Wilson Elementary School located at Orange County, California. He has been a teacher in the school for the past 15 years and most of his colleagues admire Phil for his efficiency, organization skills, and policy of refusing to waste time on nonessentials. However, there seem to be problems among the staff after Phil has become the principal. You are the superintendent of the district and several teachers from Wilson Elementary approach you and share their concerns about working with Phil. One complaint is that Phil is extremely cold and businesslike during staff meetings. Many teachers also feel that Phil works them too hard and isn’t sympathetic or understanding about their personal needs. Obviously, there is a problem with the communication in the above situation. 1. What according to you is the exact nature of the problem? 2. What communication principles would you use to handle this situation? 3. Justify your choice of principles and explain why they would work the best. 4. Devise strategies or tips you can use in your professional environment to communicate effectively with colleagues belonging to a different culture. Assignments: 2.1. Consider the issue of racial profiling. While state governments are voting to repeal racial profiling laws, some individuals are arguing for profiling all Muslims, especially between the ages of 18 and 45, at airports. Will racial profiling help identify terrorists? Provide justifications for your answer. Take a stand on the issue and write a one-page argument justifying your position. Support your argument with examples and evidence/statistics where possible. 2.2. Field Experience and Project For Project A: Develop a questionnaire that you can use during your visit to the organization. This questionnaire Page 8 should include questions on organizational interpersonal communication. These questions can be based on the components of interpersonal communication that you learn during this course and you observe being used in the organization during interpersonal communication. You will also need to develop interview questions in case you plan to interview personnel from the organization to gather information about aspects of interpersonal communication they use. For Project B: Develop an observation checklist that you can use during your visit to the organization. This observation checklist should include questions on interpersonal communication during the delivery of your chosen lesson plan in the classroom. The observation checklist can be based on the components of interpersonal communication that you learn during this course and you observe being used during the delivery of the lesson plan in the classroom. Your field experience report is due in Week 5 and your final project is due in Week 7. 3 Gender How Gender Affects Communication Discussion Questions: 3.1. Evaluate methods of applying the attraction theory to improve interpersonal communication. Describe at least two methods and explain why you think they will be effective. Did you see any examples of attraction theory in the relationships in the film? Analyze examples of how the attraction theory influenced communication in the relationship. 3.3. Work with three other students on your designated team, and role-play the following scenario: The role-play scenario involves a meeting with a teacher (male) who is gender insensitive. The players include the principal, the insensitive teacher (male), and two teachers (both female), who have raised the issue. The Page 10 male teacher belongs to a patriarchal culture, while at least one of the female teachers belongs to a society that does not discriminate between the sexes.. You will research the general behavioral characteristics of men who belong to patriarchal cultures and their attitudes toward women in general. Additionally, you will also research the characteristics and attitudes of people who belong to more equal societies, and use the knowledge gained from your research to conduct the role-play. Players: The principal, one male teacher (patriarchal culture), and two female teachers. Follow up questions: Analyze the differences between the communication styles of players/actors in the role play scenario. How did gender roles affect interpersonal communication? What barriers to communication were apparent in the dialogue? Identify the attitudes that are resulting in these barriers to communication? Provide an example to support your answer and reasoning. Participate in the discussion with your peers by asking a question, providing a statement of clarification, providing a point of view with rationale, challenging a point of discussion, or making a relationship between one or more points of the discussion. Assignments: 3.1. Field Experience and Course Project Page 11 For Project A: Visit your chosen organization and observe the organizational interpersonal communication. Use the questionnaire you developed last week to record your observations. You can also interview personnel from the organization and use the interview questions you developed to gather information about aspects of interpersonal communication. For Project B: Visit your chosen school and observe the delivery of your selected lesson plan in a classroom. Use the observation checklist you developed last week to record your observations. Consider this statement and attempt the following: Everyone tells you that you are unassertive and that that is the reason why you’ve been passed over for raises and promotions; you’re not perceived to have leadership potential. Your final project is due in Week 7. 7 Conflict How Conflict Affects Communication Conflict Management DeVito Chapter 10: Interpersonal Conflict Management Discussion Questions: 7.1. A group of students from the school volleyball team are bullying their juniors. Things have come to such a pass that a few juniors have stopped attending school. Their parents have made several attempts to resolve this situation including talking to the class teacher of the offending group and their coach, but have not seen any results. As a school leader, this matter is brought to your attention for resolution. Discuss how you will resolve this conflict. What methods of conflict resolution will you use in the situation? 7.2. Work with three other students on your designated team and role-play the following scenario: The role-play scenario revolves around a conflict in placing a special needs student in the regular classroom. One role should be assigned to each student. The different roles include that of the principal, the resource room teacher, the regular classroom teacher, and the child’s parent. The regular classroom teacher is concerned about the amount of time the child is spending in the resource room each day, even though the Page 21 child is showing good progress in the second grade classroom. The resource room teacher, on the other hand, is of the opinion that the child is very disruptive in the resource room and therefore, needs to spend more time with her. Both teachers refuse to compromise, and the situation threatens to spiral into a conflict. You will also research the characteristics and attitudes that educators need to cultivate when dealing with special needs students and use the knowledge gained from your research to conduct the role-play. Submitting the Final Project Project A and Project B: Your final project paper should be presented in the form of a 7 – 10 page Word document. In addition, you should support your recommendation with a rationale, supported by evidence in the form of research, etc. The paper should be double-spaced and in 12 pt font. Reflect on the autobiography presentation you posted at the beginning of this class and answer the following questions. Have you achieved your goals for this course? After completing this course, what would you consider to be some of the most common issues in interpersonal communication? Compare and contrast this list with the one in your autobiography. In your autobiography, you provided a description of one of your best experiences in interpersonal communication. Examine this description of your best experiences in interpersonal communication in a work situation. Do you still consider them to be the best experiences in interpersonal communication? Scholarly writing: The faculty at Argosy University is dedicated to providing a learning environment that supports scholarly and ethical writing, free from academic dishonesty and plagiarism. This includes the proper and appropriate referencing of all sources. You may be asked to submit your course assignments through “Turnitin,” (www.turnitin.com), an online resource established to help educators develop writing/research skills and detect potential cases of academic dishonesty. Turnitin compares submitted papers to billions of pages of content and provides a comparison report to your instructor. This comparison detects papers that share common information and duplicative language. Page 26 Americans with Disabilities Act Policy It is the policy of Argosy University to make reasonable accommodations for qualified students with disabilities, in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). If a student with disabilities needs accommodations, the student must notify the Director of Student Services. Procedures for documenting student disability and the development of reasonable accommodations will be provided to the student upon request. Students will be notified by the Director of Student Services when each request for accommodation is approved or denied in writing via a designated form. To receive accommodation in class, it is the student’s responsibility to present the form (at his or her discretion) to the instructor. In an effort to protect student privacy, the Department of Student Services will not discuss the accommodation needs of any student with instructors.
