THIS UNIT IS ASSESSED USING A STANDARD THAT EXPIRED AT THE END OF 2012 Task 1: Research and Generating Ideas AS 90475 Version 2 2.2 Design (Class time: approximately two weeks – class + homework time) a) Select three established designers and photocopy two design works from each of them. (You will have 6 design works in total.) Write 2-3 sentences based on the following questions for each of the works: i What kinds of subject matter does the designer use? ii What kind of colours and shapes does the designer use? iii How could you use ideas from their work in your own design works? b) Find examples of two successful contemporary designs that are relevant to your selected design projects. Consider the kind of designs that are most successful in terms of colour, simplicity, humour etc. Record these in your visual diary. Write 2-3 sentences based on the following questions for each of the works: i What kinds of subject matter does the designer use? ii What kind of colours and shapes does the designer use? iii How could you use ideas from their work in your own design works? c) b) Collect images that are relevant to your selected occupation. Collate and analyse this research to select the imagery that will be most useful for the design of your selected design projects. This imagery should be in your visual diary. You may find it useful to collect imagery in the following ways Photocopy imagery from books Make photographs of relevant imagery Watch movies and select stills that are relevant, or make notes on relevant imagery Using written notes and images summarise the key ideas that you want to explore in your selected design projects. Task 2: Generating and Developing Ideas (Class time: approximately one week – class + homework time) Select 4 - 5 designs that you will use as your main influences for your design projects. Use your designer models and occupation/character research as a starting point of your design projects. You should give your character a personality. E.g. Top Chef, Lead Guitarist, Clumsy Clown, NZ Idol. In your Visual Diary make a series of 20 quick thumbnail sketches of ideas for each of your selected design projects. Explore a wide range of possibilities and experiment with colour and media (pencils, pen, inks, aquarelles, coloured pens, paints, photography). Regularly refer to your research from Task 1. Remember that you are designing two design projects, so think about ways that the two designs could relate to each other. Task 3: Techniques and Processes of Artist Models (Class time: approximately five weeks – class + homework time) a) Developing the ideas for your design works. Select your best four ideas from your brainstorm and develop them in a series of drawings with reference to your designer models (this drawing process could include digital media, painting, photographs etc.). Things to consider: Your target market The size of your design works Layout and the use of white spaces How will your two designs relate to each other? The interplay of text and image Approximately 8 x A4 pages b) Refining the ideas for your design works. Continue developing your two designs until you are confident that they meet all of the requirements of the brief. Use your colleagues to critique your work, as well as consulting your teacher about it. Approximately 6 x A4 pages AS 90475 Version 2 2.2 Design Task 4: Presentation of Final Design (Class time: approximately three weeks – class + homework time) Each design work is to be presented in your visual diary.
