CND CYMRU Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament COMPILED BY KATE SULLIVAN, 1996 CONTENTS Introduction Group A Group B Group C Group D Group E Group F Group G Professor Mansel Davies Donation, 1967 Mary Jones Donation, March 1993 Veronica Wood Donation, March 1993 Vera Jones Donation, April 1993 Bob Cole Donation, August 1993 Fiona Hayes Donation, March 1994 James Stewart Donation, November 1994 INTRODUCTION The CND movement was founded in 1958 in the wake of the H-Bomb programme, although it was not the first organization in Britain to campaign for nuclear disarmament. It quickly gained support, and the intensity of anti-nuclear feeling in Britain was reflected in the Aldermaston Marches of the late 1950s and early 1960s. The signing of the Partial Test Ban Treaty by the USA and the Soviet Union in 1963 caused support to dwindle somewhat, although CND became a membership organization in 1966 and continued throughout the 1970s as a smaller, but active, movement. The arrival in the UK of Cruise Missiles and Trident led to a revival in the campaign for nuclear disarmament in the 1980s, and consequently CND has become the largest group of its kind in Britain. It has nearly 100,000 members nationally, in addition to some 300,000 local members, affiliated organizations such as Labour CND, Liberal CND, Trade Union CND and the CND Youth Wing. Many professional members have also formed their own groups, such as the Medical Campaign Against Nuclear Weapons, Scientists Against Nuclear Weapons and Teachers for Peace. Welsh support for CND was enthusiastic from the outset, although actual numbers of members were relatively few. A branch of CND was established in Cardiff in 1958, and small local anti-nuclear groups appeared in other parts of Wales, such as the Aberystwyth Committee on Nuclear Weapons. These independent groups later became affiliated to the Welsh National Council of the CND. Despite its close connection with the British CND movement, the National Council remained a distinctively Welsh organization, and this Welshness still characterizes the activities of its successor, CND Cymru. The CND Cymru Archives were donated to the National Library over a number of years, beginning with the first group presented by Professor Mansel Davies of Aberystwyth in 1967. The papers have been listed according to the date of donation, and the original arrangement of the files has been preserved while cataloguing.
