Classification Social Science Studies > Psychology Available grade Achieved, Merit, and Excellence Criteria for Merit The evaluation includes key comparative points between each theory’s explanations of behaviour within a field of psychology. Criteria for Excellence The evaluation includes a justified argument(s) supporting the application of a theoretical position that explains behaviour in a field of psychology. The justified argument must be supported by published research or recognised psychological theory. Explanatory notes 1 Definitions Behaviour may include the mental processes that produce the observed behaviour. Field of psychological practice refers to human contexts in which psychology is applied. Theories refer to organising ideas or concepts that describe, explain or predict behaviour or mental processes. Theories may relate to areas of psychology such as abnormal, comparative, developmental, individual differences, social psychology. 2 This unit standard can be awarded with an Achieved, Merit, or Excellence grade. For the Achieved grade to be awarded, all outcomes must be achieved as specified in the outcome statement(s). For Merit or Excellence grades to be awarded, the candidate must meet the Merit or Excellence criteria specified above. 3 Teachers will provide a range of selected studies relating to a psychological setting and/or from academic research. These may include summaries or extracts of psychological research. The studies must be sensitive to safety, privacy, gender, cultural, and other individual needs. 4 Outcome of the evaluation may be conveyed using written, oral, or audio-visual presentation in response to a given assignment. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Evaluate how theories are applied within a field of psychological practice. Range fields of psychology include but are not limited to – sport, forensic, health, education, environment, industrial and organisational, media, clinical and counselling, human development. Evidence requirements 1.1 Evaluation includes a consideration of how theories are applied to explain behaviour within a field of psychological practice. Range application of a minimum of two relevant theories in one field; consideration includes but is not limited to – evaluating the strengths and limitations of the theories ability to explain behaviour within the field.
