Classification Social Science Studies > Psychology Available grade Achieved, Merit, and Excellence Criteria for Merit Supervised psychological research activity is conducted according to the scientific method, using identified and justified research steps and key features of a selected research method. The evaluation includes an explanation of key strengths and/or limitations of the selected research method in conducting the supervised psychological research activity. Criteria for Excellence Supervised psychological research activity is conducted according to the scientific method, using identified and justified research steps and all relevant features of a selected research method. The evaluation includes a comprehensive explanation of the strengths and/or limitations of the selected research method in conducting the supervised psychological research activity and an implication and/or application of the methodology in psychological research. Explanatory notes 1 Definitions Research methods refer to the quantitative and qualitative approaches taken to help understand and explain psychological phenomena. Research methods for gathering data in psychology include – experiment, observation, survey, interviews, case study, psychometrics/tests and testing. Research steps refer to the series of steps associated with the scientific method that is used in psychological research. Scientific method is the systematic and analytical approach to scientific thought that emphasises the centrality of observation and experience in scientific enquiry. 2 This unit standard can be awarded with an Achieved, Merit, or Excellence grade. For the Achieved grade to be awarded, all outcomes must be achieved as specified in the NZQA National Qualifications Services SSB Code 130301 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA registered unit standard 27693 version 1 Page 2 of 3 outcome statement(s). For Merit or Excellence grades to be awarded, the candidate must meet the Merit or Excellence criteria specified above. 3 The psychological research activity involves teacher direction and supervision.
