(not in Katz) INDEXES, AND DIRECTORIES - EXERCISE 1. How is the Expanded Academic Index different from the Wilson indexes? How does it differ from other examples of full-text electronic databases? On what basis would you select one of them for your library? 2. Identify a category of information need for which indexes can be said to be a surrogate. What index(es) is most useful with regard to your GIN? Did you note ways in which it might have been even more helpful? 3. Does an index have any value as a substantive current events source? Try to provide an example of information related to your GIN that you were able to find using such an index alone. Could the same resource be used to identify the winner of the Tour de France Bicycle Race last summer? 4. Increasingly newspapers are providing online editions. Does your home town have a newspaper on the web? What effect do you think these web publications may have on news indexes such as the ones on our list. Why? 5. Idenify a category of information for which directories can be said to be a surrogate. Investigate one of the web's phone/internet directories (See Yahoo for suggestions). Look for information on yourself and a couple of friends. Were you successful in finding correct directory information? 6. Attempt to locate a specialized directory that has some relevance to your GIN. Can you suggest ways in which the directory might have been even more useful? If you were not able to locate a relevant directory, describe what such a tool might be like if it did exist. PRACTICE QUESTIONS 1. Where would you expect to find the citation to an article written about Sharon Stone for People Magazine? Was it difficult to find in full-text? 2. Where would you expect to find citations of information about retrospective exhibitions of Picasso's works? 3. Where would you look to find a source that will provide the rest of a quotation that begins, "I think that I shall never see ..."? 4. Where would you look to find out what academic institutions offer Ph.D.'s in Library and information science? 5. Who is the chief executive officer of the American Society for Information Science? 6. How many of these questions can be answered using the WWW? 4/01
