Minimum Funding for Graduate Students at Trent University (This is a brief summary of our minimum funding policy and should be used as a guideline only. The support levels outlined are for the 2006-07 academic year. For specific offers of funding, a student should refer to his/her letter of offer. + Some restrictions apply) M.A. Students A minimum of $12,445 per year (2006 value) provided from institutional funds - funding is provided for up to one year for course-only Master’s programs; or for up to two years for thesis based Master’s programs. - includes a *Graduate Teaching Assistantship of $8445 per year - includes $4000 from bursary funds (if eligible) or a Research Fellowship. - Option of *GTA ($8445) possible in second year for course-based master’s students if required - This level of funding will also be provided to some M.Sc. students where no faculty research funds are available M.Sc. Students A minimum of $12,445 per year to a maximum of $17,445 per year (2006 value) provided from a mix of institutional funds and research funds - funding is provided for up to two years for thesis based Master’s programs. - includes a *Graduate Teaching Assistantship of $8445 per year - the balance of funding will be provided from faculty members’ research grants - faculty members may supplement up to $5000 from research funds - Where no faculty research funds are available; a M.Sc. Student will be provided with the same funding as a M.A. student; see above. Ph. D Students Humanities/Social Sciences A minimum of $17,445 per year (2006 value) provided from institutional funds - funding is provided for up to four years - includes a *Graduate Teaching Assistantship of $8445 per year - Includes a Dean’s scholarship of $4000 - up to $5000 from bursary funds (if eligible), Research Fellowships or internal scholarships. - Option of *GTA ($8445) or course lectureship possible in fifth year - Faculty members may supplement from research funds if available Ph.D. Students Sciences A minimum of $17,445 per year up to $19,000 per year (2006 value) provided from a mix of institutional funds and research funds - funding is provided for up to three years - includes a *Graduate Teaching Assistantship of $8445 per year - includes $4000 Dean’s scholarship - the balance of funding to come from faculty members’ research grants - Option of *GTA ($8445) or course lectureship possible in fourth year - Faculty members may supplement from research funds as desired *Graduate Teaching Assistantships require an average of 10 hours of work per week, for 24 weeks during two academic terms. Work may involve acting as a seminar leader, lab demonstrator, assignment marker, etc. + Students holding a major external scholarship (OGS, NSERC, SSHRC) are eligible to hold a GTA for each year in which the scholarship is held up to the normal program maximum. However, supplementary support (i.e. RF, bursary, Dean’s scholarships) will not normally be provided for the duration of the external award. + Funding will be provided under the condition the student is in full time attendance and is present on campus on an ongoing basis, unless on a programapproved research absence (e.g. field work, need for external library). +Supplementary funding in upper years will only be provided to those students who maintain an 80% average on required graduate course work. Institutional scholarships may be used as entrance inducements, for post eligibility funding, and/or to help support minimum funding levels.
