During this project I used knowledge in parasitology and genetics combined with acquired skills in bioinformatics to identify and investigate the functional properties of one genomic region. Following this project, I am now involved in two research strands in the “war against worms”, i.e. the development of integrated strategies for field application in horses and small ruminants, and the mining of parasitic nematodes genomes to unravel novel targets. Over the first two years, I have been mostly dedicated to the first strand of research for which I have developed a collaborative network for both sheep and horse topics with prolific outputs (papers and granted projects). Now I would like to get more involved in the second strand of research, i.e. nematode genome exploration. The Sanger Institute has proven to be a reference institute in the field with many reference genomes produced. I would like to ask for an Agreenskill grant for a stay at the Sanger Institute, in J. Cotton’s lab. During this stay I would analyze some NextGeneration Sequencing data from parasitic nematodes (H. contortus and P. equorum) while developing and strengthening a collaborative network between our team, the Sanger Institute and Canadian research teams in McGill university (R. Beech) and Calgary university (J. Gilleard). Not only reinforcing my skills in bioinformatics and population genomics, this stay will help building future projects for the detection of novel therapeutic targets.
