Dear Supervisors,
Thank you for accepting our second-year students for a placement, which should completed by
May 14th, 2010.
Fieldwork II is the second fieldwork placement. It is seen as a major part of the second year
experience leading up to the final third-year experience known as Internship. The general aim of
Fieldwork II is for students to further develop responsible leadership through a “hands-on”
guided learning experience.
Students gain responsible leadership through carrying out approved job duties. These can
include:
 Participating in various agency events
 Planning, leading, and evaluating recreational activities
 Undertaking various administrative duties
 Designing displays and doing general publicity.
It is important for lines of communication between the student, the agency, and college will be
open so that students will successfully complete their placements. You will find our students are
eager to make a contribution.
Enclosed is a manual to provide support for supervisors of Fieldwork II students. Please not
appendices D, E, and F are applicable to the role and responsibilities of the Agency Supervisor
Let us know if we can be of further assistance to you.
On behalf of the CRLT faculty, I wish you an exciting and productive fieldwork experience.
Sincerely,
Toni Taylor – CRLT Faculty
Coordinator, Fieldwork II

GENERAL INFORMATION AND AGENCY SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES
1.
Fieldwork II Content
Second year students should gain practical experience in the following areas:
2.
1.1
Administration. The students are encouraged to become aware of the policies and
practices of the agency including, board relations, budgeting, record-keeping
procedures, registration, safety, personnel and supervisory practices. In the first few
weeks of the student’s placement it is recommended that they review the policies and
procedures of the agency and shadow personnel to observe the application of these.
1.2
Program. The students are encouraged to apply their classroom learning. They
should be expected to apply purposeful planning methods and communication
techniques when dealing with participants, staff members, and/or potential clientele.
1.3
Facilities. The student should be made aware of protocols for the use of the facility
including maintenance, equipment and/or materials.
1.4
General Experiences. The student should be exposed to and gain some experience
by attending agency staff, board, and other community meetings, whenever possible.
If possible, giving students exposure to different areas within the agency is also
encouraged.
Duration of Placement and Course Outline
The Fieldwork II placement consists of 6 hours per week for a period of 15 weeks for a total
of 90 hours. Students were introduced to the second year term as they were given a course
outline at the beginning of the term; it describes the course goals, objectives and
assessments. Students are eligible for course credit upon satisfactory completion of all
aspects of the program. Course outlines are available on the CRLT website.
3.
Designated Agency Supervisor
The agency is asked to assign a qualified staff member as the student's field supervisor.
Unless approved by the college coordinator, we ask that our students not be supervised by
any current college, department, and/or university students. Please consult with the college
coordinator for information and approval of any specific circumstances.
The Agency supervisor is responsible for the following:
a) Appropriate Attire
Please make students aware of what they are expected to wear during their
placement.
b) Authority of Student
Please let students know what they have the authority to do or not to do.
c) Job Description
The Agency Supervisor is responsible to clarify the student's job description at the
beginning of their placement and should any concerns arise.
3
d) Supervisory Sessions
Students are required to meet with both their Agency and College Supervisors on
a regular basis. We ask that the Agency Supervisors identify to their students
how well they are fulfilling their responsibilities and/or what students can do to
improve their performance. (For further information see also “Conferences of
Agency Supervisor and Student.”)
e) Attendance
Students are expected to attend their fieldwork at the designated times agreed
upon by the agency/college and their supervisors. If for some unexpected reason
they cannot attend during these prescribed times, they are asked to notify both
their College and Agency Supervisors.
f) Time Sheets
The Agency Supervisor is asked to sign the student’s monthly timesheet
(Appendix B.)
g) Holidays and Closures
The Agency Supervisor is asked to inform the student of any dates the Agency is
closed which would affect the students normal work schedule. In turn, at the
onset of the placement the student is expected to inform the college and agency
supervisors in advance of any school breaks or religious holidays whereby they
will be unavailable for work. The Agency supervisor and the student should
arrange how any hours missed are to be completed.
4.
Logs
Students are required to keep a weekly log of their fieldwork experience. (Appendix C) The
log can be as a tool to help consolidate fieldwork learnings. It serves as a basis for
supervisory meetings and the student’s final report.
5.
Fieldwork Project
A “fieldwork project” is identified by the third week. Each student is required to have a
project that he or she is responsible for. If possible, their responsibilities should include
planning, implementing, and evaluating the activity, event or project before the completion
of their 90 hours. It is highly encouraged that the project be reviewed by the student’s
College supervisor to ensure it is suitable and meets the objectives of the second year
placement. A form has been provided to assist in the description of the “Fieldwork project.”
To confirm agreement, the Agency supervisor is asked to complete, with the student, the
Project Proposal form by the third week of the placement and submit it to the students’
respective College supervisor. (Appendix D)
6.
Mid Term Evaluation

The Agency Supervisor is requested to complete one midterm evaluation when the
student has completed 45 hours (See Appendices E)
 The student will be completing the same form located in their own manual. When both
are complete, the agency supervisor is asked to review and discuss their evaluation with
the student to assess their performance to encourage further personal and professional
development.
* Electronic copies may be made available upon request.
4
7.
Final Evaluation and Closure of Placement
At the end of the Placement, a final evaluation will be completed (Appendix E.) Students
should be allowed to present their overall learning and understanding of their job. The
Agency Supervisor is asked to give feedback to the student about his or her interpretation of
the job description and general work performance. If possible, both Agency and College
Supervisors would participate in such a discussion.
8.
Grading
Grading is ultimately the responsibility of the College. However, at the end of the
placement, College Supervisors will consult with Agency Supervisors to assess a final
performance mark for students.
9.
Placement Evaluation Form
Please complete a ‘Placement Evaluation’ at the end of the placement so that improvements
can be made for the next fieldwork course (Appendix F.)
10. Insurance
All registered students are insured by the college during their placements.
11. Police Checks & Screening interviews, Medical
Please apply all normal agency protocol for staff or volunteers concerning police checks or
medical tests.
12. Family Connections at Placement
To promote objectivity in the students’ fieldwork experience students are encouraged to
seek placements where there are no family ties. Please contact the Program Coordinator if
you have any concerns.
13. Remuneration
No remuneration is permitted for students’ required volunteer placement; however, they can
be reimbursed for expenses incurred either on the job or for travel to and from the
placement.
If you have any questions about these expectations and/or the field placement, feel free to contact
the Coordinator Toni Taylor at 514-931-8731 (ext. 5094) or ttaylor@dawsoncollege.qc.ca.

SUPERVISION
CONFERENCES OF AGENCY SUPERVISOR AND STUDENT:
Regular conferences of agency supervisor and student are an important feature of the
structure of this course. Ideally the supervisor and student work out a regular appointment for
this conference, which should be held once a week for a 20-30 minute period. The supervisor
should be available for brief consultations between regularly scheduled conferences, although it
is desirable that major questions be handled at conference times.
Although the regularly established conference of supervisor and student is not the only
way through which learning takes place in the field, it is very important and central to the
learning experience of the student. If it is to be productive, the supervisor and student must
accept and carry the responsibilities inherent in their respective roles. The student must be an
active participant in determining the actual content and purpose of the conference. It is desirable
that the student increasingly assume more responsibility for the content of the conference
through identifying special problems, advancing ideas and raising questions when there is need
for clarification. The supervisor has responsibility for identifying matters or problems not
perceived by the student. The supervisor will assist the student in the identification of similarities
and differences in activities in order to facilitate transfer of learning from one activity to another.
There may be times when either student or supervisor will find it necessary to change the
time of the conference. The student will advise the supervisor of an inability to keep a
conference appointment in advance of the time it is scheduled, since this will make it possible for
the supervisor to rearrange another time.
The participating role and responsibility of the student in the conference has been
stressed because students sometimes expect the supervisor to assume total responsibility for the
conference and for the decisions which are reached.

facility and any equipment or materials.
c.
General Experiences. If possible, the student should be exposed to and gain some experience by
attending agency staff, board, and other community meetings, work with committees, visit individuals in
the agency and community.
The second-year placement should begin to help the student understand the total concept of the agency through
the discussion and resolution of problems and situations in the operation of the agency. The above is a guide; no
substitute exists for original thinking. It is assumed that the material will be adapted to the characteristics of the
particular agency and student's growing competency in practice (refer to competencies).

PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT AND PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS:
Desired Qualities:
Positive and cooperative attitude, open-mind, willingness to share ideas and engage in possible problem solving
discussions, being receptive to feedback, managing task and maintenance roles and responsibilities.
Preparation:
In order to help students prepare for Fieldwork II, they are required to attend and participate in CRLT

Once approved, students may begin their fieldwork in the first week of the Winter Term 2009. Students are
expected to attend all their supervisory meetings.
*To be excused from any supervisory meetings, class sessions, and/or fieldwork without penalty, the student
must present a neat, legible medical letter from the doctor. (When students are unable to attend their agency
supervisory meetings, as a common courtesy, should make every effort to contact their agency/college
supervisor.
In the second-year placement, the student is actually involved in carrying two major roles: a) that of "learner";
and b) that of "student-practitioner". These roles are closely interrelated.
Project:
As part of the approval process each student in consultation with his/her prospective supervisor will determine a
project that can be created, implemented and evaluated by the student before the end of the placement (e.g.
special event, manual, promotional project, Ped Day, outing). Project Proposal must be submitted with Proposal
Form (see Appendices F).
WEEKLY LOGS:
You are required to keep a weekly log of your fieldwork experience. The log can be described as a tool to help
you consolidate your fieldwork learnings. It will serve as a basis for supervisory meetings and your final report.
It is useful to record your impressions, new learnings and insights. New learnings might be professional, new
work place terminology, meeting new staff people and their positions, on-the-job skills (e.g., computer
application, programming, promotional, publications, communication, and leadership). Reflections may also
include what you are learning about the organization, its clientele, and/or your leadership effectiveness. In other
words, how are others responding to your interventions or actions?
