Educational Software Competition 2004 Organized by the Computer Science & Engineering Society In collaboration with the Ministry of Education The CS&ES organizes an Educational Software Competition to select a variety of Learning Materials for the Ministry of Education Sri Lanka, to be distributed over 9000 schools all over the Island through The Secondary Education Modernization Project. Their target is to facilitate G.C.E A/L & O/L students with Computer Aided Learning Materials to learn their subjects in an interactive way. It’s up to you the Undergraduates of the University of Moratuwa – to compete in the contest. The software should be a standalone application in the form of presentations / guided tours / etc, which follows Computer Aided Learning techniques. Visuals are preferred over textual interpretations. 2. It can cover any subject in any stream of the G.C.E. Advanced Level or Ordinary Level. Physical Science, Bio Science, Commerce & Arts or Mathematics, Social Studies, History, Sinhala, English, etc. 3. Single software should deal on only one Subject. 4. Any section / sections relevant to that subject can be covered in a desired way. No limitation in using technologies (Ex: Java, VB, HTML, Flash, PowerPoint, Audio/Video clips, etc) 5. Contents of the program should be guided by the syllabus published by National Institute of Education (NIE) but not essential to limited to. 6. The Software should be extremely user friendly. Less effort should be taken by the students, to be familiarized with it. Easy navigation facility is an essential ingredient. 7. Competitors are encouraged to have a Multi-Lingual support in the interfaces 8. Programmers should make sure that their software would run without problems in different Windows™ platforms with minimum requirements. Support on other operating systems (like Linux) is not expected. 9. Extreme care should be taken in using fonts unless they are embedded in the software (Specially Sinhala and Tamil). If certain uncommon fonts are used, please ship them with your software along with a Setup or a proper installation guide. 10. The names of Ministry of Education, Secondary Education Modernization Project & University of Moratuwa, along with their logos, should be displayed at the main page of your program interface. The detailed layout will be posted on the web soon. 11. Authors can have their names and other university related details in an area like “About” or “Credits” or in the initial splash screen. But any personal information is not allowed until the completion of selection process (to make sure unbiased selection). Selected ones will get the opportunity to add them later. 12. A Read Me file should accompany the software, at least including the following. a. Minimum & Recommended System requirements to run the program. b. Installation instructions c. How to begin with software and how to get help on certain issues. 13. A descriptive Help file is needed (Either integrated in the software or as a separate module) which explains the usage of software in simple. Once again you are encouraged to have it, at least in two languages. (Sinhala or Tamil along with English) Procedure 1. Application forms are available at the project website / Batch & Field Representative / photocopy centres inside the University premises. (Visit www.cse.mrt.ac.lk/cs&es/esc2004). 2. In order to register, a brief project proposal should be mailed to cses@cse.mrt.ac.lk along with the completed application form. (Or printed copies can be submitted to Kamal - CS&ES Office) 3. Project proposals should contain the following in brief. The stream and the subject of interest. Areas going to be covered. Programming languages/tools/technologies being used. Name of your application if any. 4. Your project proposals have to be approved by the Panel in order to compete in this contest. In a case of having too many project proposals dealing with the same area in a same subject, earlier registrations will get the priority. 5. Can compete as Groups or Individuals 6. In case of Groups, they should have one Project Coordinator. Maximum group members allowed is eight (8). 7. Participants can present any number of software independently. In such a case registration should be done separately for different software. 8. After registration, you will be given a Reference Number for your software via e-mail. Use it in further inquiries and submission. 9. Deadline for Registrations will be 11th October 2004. 10. Participants have the flexibility to consult the Evaluation Panel from 8th to 12th November 2004 to ensure that their developing progress is on the right track. No excuses will be accepted after the final submission. (More details about how this session is handled will be posted on the web) 11. Deadline for the Submission of software will be on 26th November 2004. 12. After the Evaluation, best software will be short-listed. Authors will be informed to make improvements suggested by the Evaluation Panel. Participants have to re-submit their application with all the source codes/any other resources used before 17th December 2004. 13. Failure to re-submit with the suggested improvements, inability to produce the original source codes and other stuff will disqualify the participants from the competition. 14. Winning software will be announced by January 2005. Submission. 1. Software in the CD media, properly labeled with the following. Software Reference Number Name of the Author or Group Members. The name of the Subject, with areas covered. 2. Source codes/other resources used are NOT required at this stage. 2. Has to be submitted on or before 26th November 2004 at 12 p.m. to Kamal - CS&ES Office – Department of Computer Science & Engineering. Re-Submission 1. Same as the earlier submission. But with all the sources in a different folder. 2. With a sketch briefly explaining how the different modules are interconnected to make the application. Re-Submission on or before 17th December 2004 to Kamal – CS&ES Office Regulations for Competitors 1. After the announcement of short-listing/selection, source codes and every other resources of the selected software should be handed over to the authority prior to the paying. 2. All selected software will be copyrighted to the Ministry of Education. 3. Participants are expected to do the minor modifications/improvements suggested by the final evaluation panel before the payments. 4. Original sources should be produced. 5. Final decisions taken by the Judging Panel will not be altered under any circumstances.
