James Salter (1767 SC - 1833 AL)
1780 The earlist documented evidence of James Salter in SC is his name on a Loyalist L:ist in 1780, when
James was only 13 years old. He is listed as a Pvt. in Col. John Cotton's regiment, Stevenson's Creek
Militia, ninety-six brigade. He was sent to Orangeburg with Lt.Col. John H. Cruger. He was paid for 183
days, 14 June to l3 Dec. 1780. ( See p. 242 LOYALISTS IN THE SOUTHERN CAMPAIGN {VOL I} by
Murtie June Clark ). Also in the Stevenson Creek Militia, Ninety Six Brigade was Charles Partin, James'
future Father-in-Law. (See p. 241 ibid)
1786 No marriage record has been found for James Salter and Ann"Nancy" Partin but they were probably
married in 1786 as they had 2 males and 1 female, in addition to themselves in the household at the time of
the 1790 Federal Census. (p.63 Heads of Families, SC, Ninety-six District,, Edgefield County) at the time
of that census, James and Ann(Partin) Salter lived just 2 households away from Ann's parrents, Charles and
Ann(Watson) Partin.
1790 In January of 1790, James Salter purchased 2 pieces of land in Edgefield Co. from William Herin.
The land was located on a Branch of the Little Saluda River called Dry Creek. (Deed book s1 p. 248 and
250 Edgefield Co, SC). This land granted to Herrin in 1786 & 1788.
1792 Sold this the land aquired in 1790 to Wm. Burges.
Believed James moved to GA early or before 1792

The husband of His sister "Temperance" was killed by Yankee Soldiers during Sherman"s March to the
Sea. William helped her with her children. Saved money for her son Robert J. (Jim) Josey which was used
to go to Medical School in what is now Tulane. He also paid unwed mother of "Della" by his son James to
leave Della to be raised by his wife and daughter Laura Elizabeth after his son James Died.
Temperance, left with four children, committed suicide in l866 by cutting her throat.
