NOTES TO STUDENTS
1.
This form is intended for students studying undergraduate degree programmes and Higher Diploma programmes with General
University Requirements (GUR), who having reviewed their credit requirements as advised by their Programme Offering
Departments, would like to apply for credit transfer or subject exemption for individual subject(s) of the General University
Requirements (GUR).
2.
Completed form should be submitted to the General Office of the Programme Offering Faculty/Department preferably before the start
of a new semester and latest before the end of the add/drop period for the semester concerned. Please attach to this form copies of the
documents in support of the qualification on the basis of which subject exemption/credit transfer/waiver for additional requirement of
CAR subjects is claimed, and where relevant, Form AS41a, if prior approval is given for subjects taken at exchange-out institution.
Original copy should be produced for verification, when required.
Please note that this form is not applicable to Research programmes and PolyU award programmes administered by SPEED.
Please visit the website of Research Office (http://www.polyu.edu.hk/ro/) or SPEED (http://www.speed-polyu.edu.hk/) for details
of the application procedures.
3.
Credit Transfer
i. In order to be considered for a PolyU award, all students must satisfy the residential requirement for at least 1/3 of the normal
credit requirement of the award. This 1/3 requirement is also applicable to Minor programme curriculum.
ii. Students shall not be granted credit transfer for more than 67% of the normal credit requirement of the award if the credits are
gained from PolyU, or for more than 50% if the credits are gained or part of these are gained from outside PolyU. The 50% and
67% ceiling is also applicable to Minor programme. Both GUR and non-GUR subjects, as well as credits ‘deducted’ at admission
stage in recognition of their entry qualifications are to be counted.
iii. Credit transfer can be given to credits earned by students through study at an overseas institution and under an approved
exchange programme. Students should, before they go abroad for exchange programme, seek prior approval from the
Programme Offering Faculty/Department on their study plan and credit transferability by completing Form AS41a. Subject to
the approval of the Programme Offering Faculty/Department and the Subject Offering Departments, if relevant, students can be
given transferred credits, with or without grade, beyond 50% of the normal credit requirement of the award. However, these
students are still required to complete at least 1/3 of the normal credit requirement of the award, unless the respective
professional bodies specify the otherwise.
iv. For students admitted to an Articulation Degree or Senior Year curriculum which is already a reduced curriculum, they
should not be given credit transfer for any required GUR subjects and they must complete at least 60 credits (excluding LCR
and underpinning/remedial subjects) to be eligible for award.
v. All credit transfer will take effect in the semester for which they are approved. A student will only be eligible for graduation at
the end of that semester, even if the granting of the credit transfer will immediately enable the student to satisfy the total credit
requirement for the award.
vi. The validity period of credits earned is eight years from the year in which the subject was completed, unless otherwise specified
by the Subject Offering Department. Credits earned should remain valid at the time when students apply for transfer of credits.
vii. A credit transfer fee of HK$145 per credit will be charged (with the exception of those full-time students paying a fixed annual
tuition fee).
4.
Subject Exemption
i. Students may apply for subject exemption if they have completed the CAR subjects in their previous studies. For approved subject
exemption cases, the relevant additional requirement of CAR subjects (i.e. CR/CW, ER/EW or CSR), if applicable, will also be
waived. However, the credits associated with the exempted subject will not be counted towards the credit requirements for award.
It will therefore be necessary for students to take another CAR subject in order to satisfy the credit requirement for the award.
ii. For approved exemption, students should register a replacement subject during the subject registration period for the semester
concerned. Students should consult the Programme Offering Faculty/Department for the replacement subject to be taken.
iii. An exemption fee of HK$75 per credit will be charged (with the exception of those full-time students paying a fixed annual
tuition fee).
5.
Waiver for additional requirement of Cluster Area Requirements (CAR) subjects (i.e. CR/CW, ER/EW or CSR)
i. Non-Chinese speakers and those students whose Chinese standards are at junior secondary level or below will be exempted from
the Chinese Reading and Writing requirements (CR/CW).
ii. Students can apply for waiver from Chinese Reading and Writing requirement (CR/CW) if they have completed a subject which
includes a reading of an extensive text (100,000 words or 200 pages) and an extensive piece of writing (and 3,000 characters for
Chinese).
iii. Students can apply for waiver from English Reading and Writing requirement (ER/EW) if they have completed a subject which
includes a reading of an extensive text (100,000 words or 200 pages) and an extensive piece of writing (2,500 words for English).
iv. Students can apply for waiver from China Study Requirements (CSR) if they have completed a subject with more than 60%
China-related content.
6.
Students will receive notification on the result of application from the Programme Offering Faculty/Department normally within 14
days from the date of submission. For approved cases, students paying credit fees will receive a debit note for settling the appropriate
fees. If students fail to settle the fees by the payment deadline, the approval of this application and the relevant subject record will be
removed.
7.
Please note that the information given in this form will only be used for processing this application.
