The 11th Annual Technology and the Arts Scholarship Competition
Mission:
The Council for the Arts of Herndon, established in 1985, provides opportunities for
artists, art scholarships and access to art for Herndon area citizens, young and old. The
Tech Arts Competition was created in 2005 to promote high school students’ artistic
expression through technology-based media, to encourage development of artistic and
technology skills, and to add creative thinkers to the workforce.
Over $85,000 in scholarships have been awarded in the past 10 years.
Who Can Enter:
Any student in grades 9-12 who attends Fairfax County Public Schools in may submit
artwork.
Categories:
Animation
Hand-drawn, computer generated, Claymation or figure/model animation.
Digital Art
Software-created works generated on the computer that use drawing, painting, or
design/building techniques. Themes and concepts may include: abstraction, surreal
arrangements, landscapes, people, animals, characters, objects, buildings and vehicles.
Digital Photography
Images captured through the use of digital camera and represented by a computergenerated print.
Entry Submission Guidelines:




Only three (3) entries per category, per school may be submitted. Each school will
determine which entries to submit.
An FCPS educator or administrator must submit all entries.
Each entry must have a separate completed entry form.
Each Digital Art & Photography entry will be submitted as a digital file, and saved
using the following naming convention:
LastName_FirstName_SchoolName_Category_Title or Part of Title.jpg
Example: Smith_Jan_Herndon_DigitalArt_Surreal Landscape.jpg

Digital Art & Photography files should be at least 300 dpi. Each JPG file should be
no greater than 10 megabytes. (The actual print size is up to the artist, to a maximum
of 24” x 24”)
Each Animation entry must be submitted on a DVD and should be no longer than 5
minutes in length. Disks should be formatted to play on a standard DVD player. Only
one entry per disk.
The submitting student must execute all artwork submitted. Plagiarized artwork or
artwork not done by the submitting student will be disqualified.
The Council for the Arts of Herndon adheres to Fairfax County Public Schools
Students Rights & Responsibilities regarding the depiction of certain content or
subjects in artwork.
ARTWORKS SUBMITTED WITHOUT COMPLETED ENTRY FORMS OR NOT COMPLYING
WITH THE ENTRY GUIDELINES OR SIZE REQUIREMENTS WILL BE DISQUALIFIED
WITHOUT NOTICE.
Entry Deadlines and Dates:




All Digital Art & Photography artwork must be submitted on the FCPS server and a
completed entry form delivered to the Fairfax County Public School Fine Arts Office
by April 15, 2015.
All Animation artwork must be submitted on DVD with a completed entry form to
the Fairfax County Public School Fine Arts Office by April 15, 2015.
Winners will be notified by April 27, 2015.
Digital Photography and Digital Art winners must submit a printed and matted
submission (maximum size 24”x24”) and deliver no later than May 8, 2015 to be
eligible for monetary prizes to:

FCPS Teacher Submission Guidelines:



Images must be posted in corresponding school folders on the Fairfax County server
at \\isdata02\art\techarts.
Artwork from each FCPS high school must be submitted together in one school folder
on the server.
Please prepare a school list of entries that includes the student names, school name,
categories, and titles and post to the server.
Judging and Awards:


Judging will be based upon the following criteria: originality/creativity, composition,
skill proficiency of tools and processes, concept/idea, quality, presentation, and
fulfilling entry guidelines.
The competition will be a juried event with professional or qualified jurors.



Submissions will be judged between April 17 and April 24, 2015, and all schools
will be provided a complete list of winners by April 27, 2015. In addition, all
students receiving awards will be notified by email.
Awards will be given for 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place, and honorable mention. Not all
prize categories may be awarded depending on the number and quality of entries.
Two special $500 cash awards sponsored by Arts Council of Fairfax County will be
made for “Best of Show” and “Council’s Choice”.
Display and Awards Ceremony:

All winning art work will be on in public display May 12th – 24th at:

 The reception and cash prize award ceremony will be held for competition winners on

May 13, 2015 at 6 pm at ArtSpace Herndon. Special guest speakers will discuss
employment prospects for students with these skills in today’s job markets.
This event is free and open to the public
Student and/or parent or guardian must attend the award ceremony May 13, 2015 at
ArtSpace Herndon to receive any monetary awards.
The Council for the Arts of Herndon may place selections from the Technology and
the Arts Competition on display at local Fairfax County public venues selected.
Matted submissions will not be returned and become the property of the Council for
the Arts of Herndon.
It is understood that the CAH has free use of the submissions for advertising,
promotion and other reasonable uses related to the Technology and the Arts Program
and the CAH mission.

Competition Information






All artwork and entry forms must be submitted by April 15, 2015.
All artwork must be original and adhere to the category guidelines and size limitations
specified in the entry guidelines.
Any winning artwork must be matted and delivered to Fairfax Ridge Center, 3rd Floor
at 3877 Fairfax Ridge Road, Fairfax, VA 22030 or to the Council for the Arts of Herndon
office at 730 Elden St, 2nd Floor, Herndon, VA 20170 no later than May 8, 2015.
The matted copy of the award winning artwork will not be returned and becomes the property
of Council for the Arts of Herndon.
A reception and awards ceremony will be held for competition winners at 6 pm on May 13,
2015 at ArtSpace Herndon, 750 Center Street, Herndon, VA 20170
Students and/or parent or guardian must attend the reception in order to receive any monetary
awards.
