Fanning the Flame Sponsored Walk – MINI WALK ROUTE (11/2 Miles) Notes: This route is mostly across The Forest on gravel paths. It goes up to Setley Pond (‘the lake’ ) round and back. You can extend your walk by doing extra laps of Setley Pond if you feel energetic! Points of local interest : Setley Pond was formed in 1941 when gravel was extracted for the construction of a wartime runway at Stoney Cross in the New Forest. It is used from time to time to sail model boats. To the north of Setley Pond is an Bronze Age barrow (marked on the map as a Tumulus. THE DOTTED RED LINE SHOWS THE ROUTE St Dominic’s Priory, Shirley Holms (01590 681874) 1. Leave The Priory through the gate and turn right onto the road. Take care to watch for cars since there is no pavement for this short stretch. 2. Pass several houses on the right. As you pass a car park in the trees on the left look out for and take a gravel path on the right onto the forest heath. Follow this path as it climbs up hill and cross the bridge over the railway. 3. Carry straight-on, taking the path that passes a house on the right. Shortly after the house take the gravel path that bears left. Continue on this path until you reach Setley Pond. 4. Circle the pond. Consider doing extra circuits of Setley Pond. For each extra circuit you can add ¼ mile to the length of your walk. 5. To return to The Priory retrace your steps: along the gravel path from the south end of the pond to the bridge over the railway. Then onwards along the path and downhill through the heath until you reach the road. 6.
