Curtin’s particular mission is to convey through everything it does a commitment to the following values: * the search for innovative applications of technology to educational purposes and other social needs, emphasising continuous improvement; * the cultivation of responsive and responsible links with the wider community, emphasising service, practical relevance, social justice and ethical behaviour; * the development of students and staff as citizens of the world, emphasising an international outlook, cultural diversity, and an informed respect for indigenous peoples. CURTIN’S ETHICS AND SOCIAL JUSTICE COMMITMENT Curtin is committed to the application of ethical principles and social justice throughout all aspects of the University. This commitment ensures the development of a University community characterised by codes of personal and collective behaviour which acknowledge and promote the University’s Guiding Ethical Principles. Underlying Values of the Ethics and Social Justice Commitment * Recognition of the rights and dignity of all individuals. * Equality of opportunity in education and employment for all. * Enhancing diversity in gender, age, culture, beliefs, attitudes, language and social circumstances. * Recognition of the particular place of indigenous peoples in Australia. * Well maintained, safe, and enhanced environments. Strategic Enablers 1. There is leadership of and commitment to ethical and socially just practices in the University’s Teaching and Learning, and Research and Development Plans. 2. Curtin’s processes and outputs in management, teaching and learning, and research and development are routinely evaluated and reviewed to ensure that they reflect the University’s Ethical and Social Justice Commitment. 3. Accountability for planning, promoting, monitoring and evaluating implementation of the commitment to Ethics and Social Justice is established. Required programs, management systems or responsibilities, for themes encompassed by the Ethics and Social Justice Commitment are established. 5. There is a central resourcing commitment to the functions of the related operational units. The Committee on Ethics, Equity and Social Justice sets out the tasks, requirements and levels of responsibility for the University to implement the Ethics and Social Justice Commitment, and monitors progress towards targets in meeting performance indicators and demonstrating continuous improvement. Performance Indicators Curtin University of Technology identifies the expression of the values underlying the commitment and the performance indicators for this expression. The summarised indicators are: * the increase in the percentage of students and staff from Equal Opportunity target groups in the Curtin population and in their representation across the University at all levels and in all activities; * the increase in plans, reports, policies and procedures, training and development activities that reflect the five underlying Ethics and Social Justice values; * the increasing evidence, in operational unit reports, of regular monitoring and implementation of strategies to address the needs of the diversity of groups and individuals they serve, and the care of the physical and biological environment; * the decrease in complaints of discriminatory practices and procedures, and the number of breaches to Occupational Safety and Health requirements.
