Position Description The Bays Hospital “Your Community Hospital” ASSOCIATE UNIT MANAGER - THEATRE Overall Job Purpose The Associate Unit Manager is an important member of the nursing unit. They are responsible and accountable for their unit in the absence of the Unit Manager. Major Responsibilities To work within and comply with the hospital’s policy and procedures across Organisational Clinical, inclusive of perioperative Infection Control OH&S Emergency Response Environmental Services Catering Administrative To work within and comply with the Quality and Risk Management Manual. Patient Care Gives direct nursing care to a group of patients with complex nursing care needs and demonstrates expertise to act as a role model. Co-ordinate nursing care for the unit and is accountable for the standard of care delivered. To ensure staff provide courteous and prompt service to medical consultants, patients, visitors and other staff. To ensure a high standard of care is maintained. To ensure the maintenance of privacy and confidentiality with regard to patients condition and medical records. To have a good knowledge of all emergency procedures, acting as Unit Warden when required to ensure patients safety. Communicate and liaise with all members of the health care team in planning, delivery and evaluation of patient care. Unit Management Demonstrate accountability for cost control and the utilisation of resources effectively (manpower, time and equipment). To assume responsibility and accountability for setting appropriate staffing levels for the subsequent shifts. To actively participate at relevant meetings. Attending a minimum of 5 Unit Meetings annually and attending a minimum of one OH&S Committee Meeting and one Infection Control Committee Meeting annually. To assume responsibility to Chair Unit Meetings as planned with the Unit Manager throughout the year. To ensure the adequate supervision and appropriate utilisation of Registered Nurses, Enrolled Nurses and Technician staff in the delivery of care to patients. To make recommendations regarding changes to practice and procedures as appropriate. Assist in the regular review of the units’ objectives. Be aware of the legal requirements for safe-keeping and administration of drugs. Assist the Unit Manager in performance appraisals of staff within the unit. To proactively be involved at Clinical Practice Committee meetings, attending a minimum of 3 per year Quality & Risk Management Participate in the organisation’s accreditation process. Participate in the organisation’s Quality Management and Risk Management program. Participate in the collection of Clinical and Process Indicators. Understand the Severity Assessment Matrix and reporting system. Be aware of and comply with all Commonwealth and State Statutory and Regulatory Requirements in relation to privacy. Adhere with the current Occupational Health & Safety policies and procedures of the organisation in line with the Occupational Health & Safety Act 2004. Adheres to and is aware of the information in relation to the Child Protection (Prohibited Employment) Act 1998 and understand responsibilities and obligations under this Act. Has declared that they are not a person prohibited by The Act from seeking, undertaking, or remaining in child related employment. To ensure Incident and Non Conformance Reports are initiated when appropriate and investigated with diligent review and outcomes as appropriate. To proactively initiate and complete Peer Review and/or Root Cause Analysis teamwork and documentation. Education and Research To participate in orientation of new staff. To successfully attain competency in CPR each year. To actively participate in the OH&S Manual Handling Program, completing all tasks and assessments annually and proactively being involved at the unit level to mentor all staff through the program. To participate in a minimum of 6 in-service education sessions available within the organization. To attend a minimum of one fire and safety training session every 2 years alternating yearly with a minimum of one warden training every two years To demonstrate a working knowledge of all emergency procedures and equipment within the hospital. To comply with and practice within the Nursing Professions’ Scope of Practice Maintaining current professional knowledge and skills for management / clinical competency. Provides effective leadership and is an effective role model to staff. Practices safe working procedures and complies with Health and Safety policies and procedures. Promote a safe working environment by identifying and reporting hazards. Public Relations To maintain good communication with medical consultants and all other staff, to promote good working relationships. To encourage patient suggestions for improvement. Ensure the Unit Manager is informed about any dissatisfaction with nursing or hospital services by medical consultants / patients or other staff. To encourage use of hospital facilities by medical consultants and the community. To participate in activities which enhance the professional standing of the hospital within the community. Performance Review and Development A formal performance review will be conducted annually incorporating past performance and anticipated goals and objectives, achievements and areas to be addressed and Clinical competencies as required by the hospital. More frequent informal reviews will be conducted throughout the year. Proactively works with the Unit Manager to develop and complete relevant portfolio work assigned to the AUM. Reporting Reports to Unit Manager Key Skills Essential Qualifications Registered Nurse Division 1 currently registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency Post graduate perioperative qualification Excellent clinical skills Well developed communication and motivational skills Minimum three years post registration experience Proficient skills in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Outlook. Desirable Qualifications Intensive Care / Coronary Care Certificate Experience in a management position Private hospital experience Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and flowcharting.
