AmeriCorps Massachusetts Promise Fellows deliver the resources young people need to be successful in life by creating, managing, and leading meaningful out-of-school time programs for youth in grades 6-12.
Fellow projects focus on mentoring, social and emotional learning, college and career readiness, academic enrichment, and community service-learning.
The Massachusetts Promise Fellowship achieves this by placing AmeriCorps Fellows with non-profit organizations and state/local government agencies that focus on fulfilling the needs of our youth by providing:
S ERVICE D ESCRIPTION
Since 1967, Northeastern University’s Marine Science Center (MSC) has generated outstanding teaching and research in the marine sciences. The MSC’s Outreach Program reaches over 7,000 people per year through various programs and events, and has traditionally focused on serving teachers and students in eastern Massachusetts. Through engagement in STEM inquiry and community action, the
Beach Sisters program will meet the needs of underserved populations in the City of Lynn by offering outof-school-time opportunities for girls to develop a connection to the local environment, build confidence and self-esteem, and increasingly consider higher education and careers in the sciences. The Fellow will make an impact through training and mentoring teens to deliver STEM- and marine-related activities to their peers and younger youth, as well as by facilitating opportunities for girls to connect with the local environment and community through field trips and guest presenters representing academia, industry, and other interests related to the environment.
