Welcome to the My Surgery Leaflet Demo
Welcome to Silsden Group Practice
At
our surgery we have seven doctors and four nurses providing
the highest quality healthcare to patients in Silsden.
We use this surgery leaflet as a way of presenting all our patients with an up to date resource
for all information relating to our practice, the doctors and the healthcare they provide. We try
to keep it current with any news, developments and details that are relevant to the Silsden
surgery and our patients.
As well as a source of information about our practice, the staff and the services we provide, we
hope you will use this leaflet as a useful source of links to other reliable locations of health
related information. The doctors will also add topical health information from time to time.
Have a look around our leaflet and please do send us some feedback. We can use your
thoughts to improve our online services and further develop the leaflet to make it a more useful,
practical application for the patients of Silsden.

What other services does the practice offer?
Annual medical reviews for people with longterm illness
We offer these appointments around the time of your birthday. This includes people with
diabetes, respiratory disease, hypertension, heart disease, epilepsy, mental health problems
and thyroid disease. Annual reviews are also available for all patients over the age of 75 years
at their request.
What if I am under 75 years and have no health problems?
You may like to take the opportunity to have a health check every five years. High blood
pressure and diabetes can be detected by health checks before symptoms start to develop.
Minor surgery
All partners in the practice perform minor surgery. Some minor skin problems can be treated
without the need for hospital referral.
Cervical Cytology (Smear tests)
We recommend all women between the ages of 25 and 65 years have regular smear tests. The
Health Authority, on our behalf, operates a "call and recall" system to remind you of this. You
will be offrered smear tests every 3 years until the age of 50, then 5 yearly until you reach 65
years of age.
Family Planning and Sexual Health

leaflet is a good source of advice and information http://www.fpa.org.uk/
Antenatal and Postnatal Care
Preconceptual advice is available from doctors and midwives. We recommend that you confirm
planned pregnancies with a home pregnancy test. Following this you should arrange a booking
appointment via reception with a midwife. Your midwife will plan your antenatal care with you.
For uncomplicated pregnancies your care is provided in the practice.
The midwives hold antenatal and relaxation clinics weekly. Your midwife will visit you at home
after your baby's birth. Your Health Visitor will also visit you and arrange postnatal support. The
Health Promotion England book “From Birth to Five― is also a useful resource for parents
This is available online at www.dh.gov.uk search for “Birth to Five―

Carer's Resource
Support for carers is available via the practice. Information is available from reception as well as
from the doctors and nurses.
Minor Illnesses
Sore Throats
Most sore throats are caused by a virus infection which antibiotics cannot
cure. With simple treatment the patient normally gets better in four or five
days. Tonsillitis usually starts with a sore throat, which causes pain on
swallowing. There may be a fever, it might be possible to see white spots
on the tonsils and glands in the neck may be swollen and painful. A hoarse
voice, dry cough and sore throat indicates a viral laryngitis.
TREATMENT
Adults: Use regular Paracetamol or Ibuprofen. Drink plenty of fluids and
take steam inhalations.
Children: Paracetamol liquid (Calpol or Disprol) plenty of drinks.Make an
appointment to see the doctor if the sore throat is getting worse after two
days, or if the patient complains of earache.
Feverish Child
Children often develop feverish illnesses, which settle spontaneously in 2448 hours.
TREATMENT
Give paracetamol (Calpol, Disprol) liquid. Remove child’s clothing and
offer regular sips of cool water. Sponging with tepid water may also help to
reduce the temperature. Do not give aspirin to children under 12. Make an appointment to see
the doctor if the temperature does not fall after a paracetamol (although it may rise again later)
or if the child becomes drowsy or obviously unwell.
Stuffy or Runny Nose
The common cold usually starts with a hot feeling in the back of the throat.
The patient feels unwell and aches, and the nose starts running with a
clear liquid which becomes a thick yellow discharge after three to four
days. ANTIBIOTICS DO NOT HELP.
TREATMENT
As for sore throat. Babies and young children often have repeated colds.
This helps them build up their resistance to infection. They cough because of the discharge
running from the nose down the back of the throat. Do not give cough linctus. Try normal saline
nose drops, two drops in each nostril before bed.
Coughs
If dust or food enters the air passages, coughing acts as a protector. It also prevents mucus
from causing infection on the chest. To suppress this action with cough mixtures can cause
more harm than good.
TREATMENT
For dry coughs a linctus can be bought from the chemist. Make an appointment to see the
doctor if coughing continues for more than a week or two after a common cold has cleared up, if
coughing produces a yellow or green sputum – it may mean the lower air passages are
infected, if breathing is accompanied by a pain in the chest or shortness of breath, or if coughing
produces blood.
Vomiting
Vomiting may be caused by a virus infection of the stomach, food poisoning and by eating or
drinking too much. It normally stops within 24 hours and may be followed by diarrhoea. Some
children will vomit when they have a temperature.
TREATMENT
Rest. Eat nothing for 24 hours. Drink small sips of water regularly. As the stomach settles try
bread or clear soup before gradually returning to a normal diet. Children and Infants: Try
Dioralyte sachets made up with cooled boiled water to replace body fluids. Make an
appointment to see the doctor if vomiting is accompanied by continuous stomach pain, if
vomiting lasts for longer than 24 hours, or if a vomiting child has a temperature of more than
38C (100F).
Diarrhoea
Diarrhoea is unpleasant but rarely dangerous. It may be due to change of diet, food poisoning or
travel abroad. It is often accompanied by colicky (cramp-like) pains and usually begins to get
better in 48 hours.
TREATMENT
As for vomiting (see above). Make an appointment to see the doctor if it does not start to settle
after 48 hours, if an attack comes shortly after a visit abroad, or if there is continuous pain or
blood.
If you are unsure about these or any other medical matters feel free to contact your
doctor or pharmacist for advice.

and 10.00am.
If you are too ill to come to the surgery a doctor will visit you at home. This would normally mean
that you are confined to bed or otherwise physically unable to come to the surgery.
We do ask you to attend the surgery whenever possible. The receptionist may ask for further
information to enable the doctor to determine the priority and nature of the visit.
Patient Rights
We encourage you ro respond positively to the letters that you receive reminding you of
opportunities for health care assessment, screening and advice.
Please let the practice know if you do not wish to receive the health care offered. This saves
writing repeatedly to you.
Please do let the surgery know if you are unable to keep an appointment. The time can almost
always be used by someone else - even at short notice.
Patients who consistently fail to keep appointments, and fail to let the reception know will
receive a letter of notification from the Practice Manager. Failing to keep appointments after this
will result in removal from the practice.
GP Training
Medical students and qualified junior doctors learn how to consult and manage illness and
disease through their placements in our practice. Fully qualified doctors who have been
selected for career training in general practice join us for 6 month periods to complete their
training.
You may at times find that the registrar is consulting alongside one of the partners or that we
ask for your permission for your consultation to be recorded on video camera. The purpose is to
develop and improve the doctor's consultation skills. There is no obligation on your part.
Our practice undergoes regular external reviews in order to maintain teaching status. This
includes assessment of the ways in which we maintain your medical records. Your permission is
always sought first. You will always be asked about any teaching that is planned for your
consultation.
Please do let the receptionist know if you wish to consult alone.

Complaints
We make every effort to give the best service possible to everyone who attends our practice.
However, we are aware that things can go wrong resulting in a patient feeling that they have a
genuine cause for complaint. If this is so, we would wish for the matter to be settled as quickly,
and as amicably, as possible.
Please do give us feedback about the services that we provide. Please do talk to your doctor if
there are things that you do not understand or are uncertain about.
If you have a complaint about any aspect of our service please contact Mrs Glen (Practice
Manager). We will do our utmost to resolve any problems. If a complaint arises our aim is to
explain any misunderstandings and to reconcile any disagreements.
Emergencies
Normal working hours - Telephone 01535 652447 or 652448 between 8.00am and 6.00pm
Monday to Friday inclusive
Outside normal working hours - still phone the above numbers. At nights, bank holidays and
weekends a recorded message will give you the telephone number of Local Care Direct.
The person answering your call will send details to the local GP Emergency Centre (which is at
Airedale Hospital near to the A&E department). A nurse will then triage the information and call
you back to arrange an appointment or visit if necessary.
Please respect that this is an emergency service.
You will be advised to contact the Health centre during opening hours for any non-urgent
problems. NHS Direct is available 24 hours for health care advice.
Travel Information
If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with
the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements. This will include which countries and
areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required. There
is further information about countries and vaccinations required on the links below
Europe & Russia
North America
Central America
South America
Carribean
Africa
Middle East
Central Asia
East Asia
Australasia and Pacific
It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible - at least 6 weeks before you
travel - as a second appointment will be required with the practice nurse to actually receive the
vaccinations. These vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine. Your second
appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.
Most travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and
above the normal prescription charge. This is because travel vaccination is not included in the
services provided by the NHS and therefore is a chargeable service.
Travel Health Questionnaire
To help us offer the appropriate advice, please fill out the online form before coming to see the
nurse.

PALS
PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Service)
The NHS employs over a million staff in thousands of locations. It is a large and complex
organisation providing a broad range of services. It is not surprising that sometimes you or a
loved one may feel bewildered or concerned when using the NHS. And this can be at times
when you are feeling at your most vulnerable and anxious.
So, what should you do if you want on the spot help when using the health service? The NHS
expects all members of staff to listen and respond to you to the best of their ability. But
sometimes, you may wish to talk to someone employed especially to help you. The Patient
Advice and Liaison Service, known as PALS, has been introduced to ensure that the NHS
listens to patients, their relatives, carers and friends, and answers their questions and resolves
their concerns as quickly as possible.
PALS also helps the NHS to improve services by listening to what matters to patients and their
loved ones and making changes, when appropriate.
What does PALS do?
In particular, PALS will:







Provide you with information about the NHS and help you with any other health-related
enquiry
Help resolve concerns or problems when you are using the NHS
Provide information about the NHS complaints procedure and how to get independent
help if you decide you may want to make a complaint
Provide you with information and help introduce you to agencies and support groups
outside the NHS
Inform you about how you can get more involved in your own healthcare and the NHS
locally
Improve the NHS by listening to your concerns, suggestions and experiences and
ensuring that people who design and manage services are aware of the issues you raise
Provide an early warning system for NHS Trusts and monitoring bodies by identifying
problems or gaps in services and reporting them.
