School of Music SUGGESTED SEQUENCE OF WORK and DOCTORAL CHECK LIST Doctor of Arts in Music This sequence of work and check list should be used by doctoral students as a supplement to the Doctoral sections of the graduate School catalog. The check list below includes items related specifically to the doctoral program in the School of Music. _____ 1. Audition or qualifying recital. For all students in performance or donducting primary or secondary emphases. Student should contact department chair of emphasis area or appropriate faculty in conducting for details. In theory and composition, the department chair of emphasis should be contaced for details on compositions that should be submitted. Students should also consult with department chair of second emphasis area to see if an audition will be required. Department chair will file an acceptance report. _____ 2. Assignment of program advisor. The assignment will usually accompany the School of Music Admission and Confirmation letter. _____ 3. Student recieves admission letters from Graduate School and School of Music. _____ 4. Advisory examinations. Music history and music theory (all candidates). Instrumental techniques (students with a primary or secondary emphasis in brass, woodwind, percussion, or stringed instruments). Music education (for students with a primary or secondary emphasis in music education). These examinations will normally be given during the first week of the fall semester. For exact times, please contact the Graduate Coordinator in the School of Music. Results of the examinations will be sent to the student and the major adviser. Course requirements stipulated on the results sheets will become part of the student’s curriculum and should be included in the Plan of Study. Advisories need only be taken once. _____ 5. End of first semester in-residence (10 hours or more), 3.00 GPA required. _____ 6. Second semester. Appointment of Doctoral Recital Committee. The student should begin on this immediately after the begginning of his/her second semester in residence. In the Doctor of Arts degree in music, doctoral recitals and/or concerts are part of the dissertation requiremen and often come prior to comprehensive examinations. The student and program adviser should confer on committee members who are to be recommended. A standart committee has four members including a faculty representative appointed by the Graduate School. Membership on the committee may be changed at any time using the “Request to Change a Doctoral Committee Member” form. If the dissertation subject is of a natre that requires special expertise, the Doctoral Committee membership may vary according to the needs of the dissertation. In case the program adviser does not hold the doctoral research endorsement, a faculty member with updated Fall 2012 the endorsement must be appointed to act as Research Professor and supervise the dissertation. In this case, the program adviser may co-chair the committee. _____ 7. Second semester. Development of Plan of Study. Should be completed prior to doctoral interview. Form available in School of Music Office. _____ 8. Second semester. Doctoral Interview. The interview will offer the student’s committee and other graduate faculty a chance to talk with the student as to questions concerning past experience and future plans. The student should bring at least 15 copies of his/her Plan of Study to the interview. All signatures must be obtained before copies are made. _____ 9. Recital or concert hearing for performance or conducting emphasis. For performance emphasis: the Hearing should take place on the UNC campus a minimum of two weeks prior to the recital. Hearing should be attended by area faculty with attendance of Doctoral Research Committee optional. Hearing report should be picked up at the Music School Office by the doctoral student. For conducting emphasis: Members of the student’s Doctoral Recital Committee may be requested to attend one of more rehearsals prior to concert and give program adviser an evaluation, at the same time signing hearing form. _____ 10. First recital or concert. The recital or concert must take place on the UNC campus. The candidate is responsible for making arrangements with a recording technician for the recording of the concert. Two copies of the recording will be at the candidate’s expense and are to be filed with the Music School Office. Recital: Performance or Pedagogy Emphasis. For performance emphasis, both recitals must be on UNC campus. For pedagogy emphasis, the recital must be given on UNC campus. Performance must be attended by Doctoral Recital Committee. Evaluation will be made in conference with program adviser and student’s applied performance department, upon completion of the recital. Program adviser should bring recital report form to recital. Please refer to current UNC bulletin for additional information. Concert: Choral Conducting Emphasis or Orchestral Conducting Emphasis. At least one of the candidate’s two concerts must be on the UNC campus. Concert, if on the UNC campus, must be attended by Doctoral Recital Committee. In cases where it is impossible for the orchestral conducting candidate to have exclusive use of a large ensemble for a full concert, it is recommended that the candidate work with a large ensemble for 8-10 hours preparing a program of 30-40 minutes duration. The program would be given during regular rehearsal time with the candidate’s committee in attendance. In addition, the candidate will be expected to work apporiximately 10 hours with smaller ensembles preparing a program of 30 minutes in length. This music could be performed at the same time as the large ensemble or on a separate concert. Concerts: Wind Ensemble Conducting Emphasis. The candidate will be reponsible for the following conducting concerts: a. b. c. d. _____ 11. Full concert with the University Band. Major work with the Symphony Band. Major work with the Wind Ensemble. Partial concert (in conjunction with other conducting candidates) with chamber ensemble. Language research tool requirement. At a time stipulated by the program adviser, the student should satisfy the language, research tool requirement for his/her emphasis. In most cases, this should be done before the submission of the dissertation proposal and updated Fall 2012 must be completed prior to admission to the candidacy (Graduate School requirement). Proof of completion of requirement must be placed in student’s file in the Music School Office. See current bulletin for details. _____ 12. Permit to take written comprehensive examinations. Before the permit to take the written comprehensive exams will be released by the Graduate School, the student must have the following: a. Successfully completed 33 semester hours of work beyond the master’s of which 24 semester hours have been taken. b. Cummulative GPA of 3.00 for all work taken at UNC in the doctoral program. c. Doctoral Committee appointed. d. Plan of Study on file in the Graduate School Office. _____ 13. Written comprehensive examinations. All written comprehensive examinations must be taken within a one year time period. The student should contact the Graduate Coordinator for arrangement of time and place. The completed examination will be evaluated by the appropriate area faculty. The student will be informed of results and copies of the reccomendations will be sent to the major professor and the Music School Office. _____ 14. Oral comprehensive examination. The oral comprehensive examination shall be administered except in those cases in which the student failed the written comprehensive examination. The following procedure will apply in the scheduling to the oral comprehensive. a. Administering the Oral Examination shall be the program advisor, the secondary emphasis advisor, and faculty from the following departments in the School of Music, if different from the primary and secondary emphases: (1) Music History and Literature; (2) Music Theory and Composition; (3) applies area in some cases. A faculty representative from outside the School of Music will be appointed by the Graduate School. If any of these areas are not represented on the student’s Doctoral Committee, and extra person or persons shall be added just for the Oral Examination. This may be done on the oral examination request form. b. PLEASE NOTEL IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PROGRAM ADVISOR, USING THE PROPER FORM AVAILABLE AT THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC OFFICE, TO SCHEDULE THE DATE, TIME, AND PLACE OF THE ORAL EXAMINATION WITH THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OFFICE. THIS MUST BE DONE THREE WEEKS PRIOR TO THE WEEK IN WHICH THE ORAL ECAMINATION WILL BE GIVEN. IT WILL BE THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO INFORMALLY CONACT THE ORAL EXAMINATION COMMITTEE TO DETERMINE AN ACCEPTABLE DATE, TIME, AND PLACE. THIS WILL HELP GREATLY TO EXPEDITE THE SCHEDULING OF THE EXAMINATION. The Graduate School Office will confirm the date, time, and place of the oral examination in writing with copies to all concerned. c. No oral examination will be scheduled during the last two weeks of the semester. d. The faculty representative must be in attendance before the oral exams can begin. if the faculty representative is absent, the Graduate School Office must be contacted so a replacement can be sent. updated Fall 2012 e. The Graduate School Office must be notified of the date, time, and place of the oral examination by the Monday prior to the week in which the examination is to take place. _____ 15. The student, with approval of research professor, may begin initial dissertation research. This item does not have to be at this point in sequence, but must be subsequent to doctoral review. _____ 16. Dissertation proposal. The candidate is urged to obtain online the Graduate School Thesis and Dissertation Manual for details on proposal and dissertation procedure. The dissertain proposal must be filed in the Graduate School Office. NO LATER than the last day of the semester prior to graduation. The student should consult with their major professor and the Graduate School Office for the proper form for the proposal. Credit hours (4 semester hours) for proposal may be taken any time prior to this submission of the dissertation proposal. (Also, see “Doctoral degree program requirements” in Graduate Section in the current UNC Bulletin.) _____ 17. Second recital/concert hearing. Performance recital hearing must be done on the UNC campus. See No. 10. At the dicretion of the student’s Doctoral Committee, the performance of an off-campus conducting concert will be preceded by the submission of an audio tape recording for hearing by the committee. The tape must be apporved by the committee before the candidate will be allowed to proceed with the off-campus concert. _____ 18. Second recital/concert. For performance emphasis, recital must be on the UNC campus. See No. 11. In case of an off-campus conducting concert, the student’s program advisor or another designated member of the committee must be in attendance. Travel expenses of the committee member will be the responsibility of the candidate. An audio and if possible video tape recording must be made and submitted to the committee for final approval. _____ 19. Creative requirement for secondary emphasis. The secondary emphasis advisor must approve the creative project in the secondary area. _____ 20. Admission to candidacy. (No student will be graduated at the end of the semester in which they are admitted to candidacy.) The Dean will submit the student’s name to the Graduate Council for admission sto candidacy upon the successful completion of following: a. The Doctoral Committee has been appointed by the Dean of the Graduate School b. Written and oral comprehensive examinations have been passed. c. Dissertation proposal has been filed in the Graduate School Office. d. Research tool(s) (language requirement) have been completed. _____ 21. Application for graduation. Application for graduation must be filed in the Graduate School Office no later than 30 days prior to the first day of the semester the student expects to graduate. Application for graduation will be accepted during the first two weeks of the graduating semester with a $10.00 late fee. _____ 22. Defense of dissertation. The candidate is urged to obtain online the Graduate School Thesis and Dissertation Manual for details on proposal and dissertation procedure. The dissertation must be presented to the Graduate School Office in acceptable for three weeks prior to the defence examination. The date, time, and place of the dissertation updated Fall 2012 defense will be arranged by the research professor, using the proper form available at the School of Music Office, and submitted to the Graduate School Office. The same procedure as outlined in number 15 for scheduling the oral comprehensive examination should be followed. No dissertation defence may be scheduled for the last two weeks of the semester. In the case where a reasearch professor has directed the dissertaion, the research professor will hood the candidate and receive a copy of dissertation. _____ 23. Dissertation. The original plus three copies of the corrected and approved dissertation (including an abstract not to exceed 600 words) must be filed in the Graduate School Office at least 17 days before graduation. No dissertation defence will be scheduled during the last two weeks of a semester. _____ 24. The student must pay for publication of the dissertation in Dissertation Abstracts, and for binding and mailing the three copies of the dissertation, and any doctoral surcharge or other outstanding charges. _____ 25. The student must file a vita at the Graduate School Office to be included in the Permanent record. _____ 26. Upon graduation the student should inform the Music School Office of any change of address or position and keep the School of Music informed of such changes as they occur in future years. updated Fall 2012
