A handle insert is wrapped with cane incorporating 3 red hearts on each side to add to it’s charm. The ‘x’ embellishment is added as a finishing touch. Students will choose one of 3 weaving patterns for continuous weave (all included in the pattern). Students will stencil on buckskin collar, add decorative bead tassel and learn a unique binding technique. As you weave with reed, Linda will teach you her techniques to create this unique shaped basket with emphasis on technique and shape as you create a little belly. Techniques are plain weave, continuous weave, scarfing, packing, fitting and lashing a rim. The main body of the basket is woven using stacked weavers in a twill weave. Attention to detail is a must because an intentional mistake is made every row so that the twill design works out. The basket is then finished off with a cut, tucked, and lashed rim. Top it off with the great border and leather straps that just get better with each time you grab and go – which is sure to become a daily event! This double wall basket was designed to fit a Fiesta baking dish. Woven with dyed reed on the inside and natural reed on the outside. A false rim is added for the wooden lid to sit on. Finished with raspberry reed above the false rim and matching ceramic handles. A multi-colored drawer pull is attached to the wood lid for a festive look. Students will also learn a technique to make your basket sit flat. Each basket will be completed with this lovely piece of turquoise or there will be a few other stone options. Enjoy weaving with beautiful colored reed. Learn Japanese twill, three rod-wale with a step-up, and stack weaving. Hand shaping will be stressed. Space dying will be discussed. One will have a D handle, the next will have side handles and the third will have a flat handle across the top. It is possible the rims may not be completed except for the 3rd basket which will need to be completed so that the handle may be added. However, every attempt will be made to push for total completion. Many tips and techniques will be shared to assist weavers in completion of the baskets. Traditionally used for serving bread/rolls, the oval sweetgrass basket has multiple uses. Sweetgrass baskets, also referred to the Charleston Basket, are coiled of sweetgrass and southern long leaf pine needles and lashed with palmetto strips. No Water Required! I will share with the class all things concerning White Oak from how I select my trees, how I prepare the wood making it suitable for weaving to the Owens method of rimming. Two staves will be walnut for handle placement. The basket is woven on a class mold using fine cane, finished with a one-piece walnut rim and handle, and accented with maple knobs. A tool kit is provided. INTERMEDIATE 8am-5pm $110 7-1/2” L x 5” W x 3” H 5-1/2” x 3” x 2-1/2” Using cedar bark for the spokes, this sculptural basket uses basic twining to undulate the cedar with the placement of the wire. The finish is an easy lashed border of yellow cedar outer bark. Now there is a new twist to the Cottage Bureau Basket. Have some fun with curling. The basket is woven over a mold with hand pounded black ash weavers. Flared cherry handles and pre-bent rims, give this basket a distinctive look. INTERMEDIATE 8am-5pm $110 INTERMEDIATE 8am-5pm $120 F820 Cedar Tapestry Necklace Karen Mitchell 2” High x 1-1/2” Wide Woven on a mold, this necklace is twined with waxed linen, with options of using fiber, beads and fine strips of leather to create a one of a kind necklace that is woven on spokes of Alaskan Yellow Cedar. The necklace is finished with either a folded, stitched rim or a braided rim. Students will receive supplies for a second necklace which will be started in class. Students should bring a small, pointed packing tool, small shart scissors and a personal work light would be helpful. ALL LEVELS 8am-5pm $65 F823 The Roundy Jo Campbell-Amsler 10-1/2” Diameter x 10” H This is a very precise, rounded, willow rib-style basket. A double rim will give the shape some strength, while learning to use a shaping block and knife to form the ribs will help create the lovely curves needed for this basket. Leaving the ‘tails’ of the frame exposed give each basket its own personality. Woven in a twill pattern, this stool will make a lovely addition to your home. The woven area of this beautiful stool is 9” x 11-1/2”. This is a large bushel style basket that starts with a wooden base. Most weaving is done using a chase weave with emphasis on shaping. The handles start with #10 round reed, which is then wrapped using #2 round. The handles off a nice highlight to this basket. So is it or isn’t it a double walled basket? Learn to add randing arrows to a basket without leaving those nasty ends inside the basket. Basket starts with a simple plaited base with added stakes to round the corners. A hand carved push-in handle and a 3/2 lashing complete the basket. The instructor was the discoverer of these hidden basketmakers and the author of their intriguing story. Made of hand pounded black ash, like the originals, students will learn Bushwhacker weaving techniques including their unique handle design. INTERMEDIATE 8am-5pm $79 Learn to shape this very usable, sturdy basket around a rectangle hoop for the handle. Add the corner bi-spokes before working the side weaving. The corner bispokes will include a dyed spoke to make the corner braids more visible. Several color options will be offered. The corner braids are a three strand braid with cane in all four corners. INTERMEDIATE 8am-5pm $60 13” L x 12” W x 8” H These 3 nesting bins have solid woven bases and are completely smoked and dyed reed. Skills taught are start/stop weaving, twining, arrow twining, creating a handle opening, traditional rim and braided handle pulls. A great idea for storage. Pattern includes all 3 sized. INTERMEDIATE 8am-5pm $60 Kits for the other 2 sizes can be purchased for an additional $60 F830 Leta’s Cherokee Wheels Laura Lee Zanger 10” W x 14” L x 7” H This market basket is made in the 20th Century basket style of the Cherokee which features their use of color weavers ad stakes to create a pattern in color. It also features an accent with the Cherokee Wheels technique. This is an easy and fun technique to learn. The basket pairs well with a TN Indian Pigtail Swing handle. Students will use a combination of 7 ply and 4 ply waxed linen and delica beads. Linda will demonstrate and teacher her techniques throughout the class. Emphasis on technique, shape and tension. Those not able to complete in class will have instructions to be able to complete. Beginning on a slotted wood base, students will learn purse construction. Bag is woven in chase weave with reed & waxed linen. With hands-on instruction, students will make a pattern, cut & stencil their own collar of butter soft buckskin. Binding & shoulder strap are uniquely different on this labor of love.
