New Line Service Reports
Live service status information is now available to pharmacies and dispensing appliance
contractors through their Smartcard. The HSCIC Service Status pages
http://servicestatus.nhs.uk/ show the availability of national infrastructure services, such as
EPS, Spine, N3 and the Care Identity Service, which manages Smartcard access.
This means that a dispenser experiencing problems accessing or processing an electronic
prescription can see at a glance if there is a national service issue. If it is not a national
service issue, it is likely to be a problem with their PMR system or with their local equipment
or internet connection. In this case, users should contact their supplier’s helpdesk for
support.
Controlled Drugs Implementation
Legislation came into force on 1 July 2015, to allow controlled drugs listed under schedules 2
and 3 to be prescribed and dispensed using EPS. Now changes need to be made to all EPS
enabled prescribing and dispensing systems.
System suppliers have been sent the amended technical requirements and once they have
completed assurance and testing, controlled drugs can be implemented within EPS across
England.
The HSCIC are currently working with dispensing suppliers to identify their estimated
implementation dates.
Temporary Card Access
The HSCIC is aware of the potential business continuity risks associated with lost or stolen
Smartcards and has issued guidance to local RA teams so that locked Temporary Access
Cards (TACs) can be provided to pharmacies that consider themselves at risk.
TACs are Smartcards with a pre-defined set of pharmacist access rights. They can be
activated by the sponsor or Local Smartcard Administrator, in conjunction with the
pharmacist who requires the card. Contact your RA team if you are interested in obtaining a
TAC.
EPS Forum
The latest EPS Forum was held on 1 July 2015. A range of topics that were covered, including
EPS benefits and Phase 4 are available at
http://systems.hscic.gov.uk/eps/getinvolved/forumpresjuly.pdf
Enhanced Prescription Tracker
The EPS prescription tracker is now even better and you can expect new features to be
added regularly. Prescribers and dispensers can use it to check the status of a prescription
and can search by date range or prescription version and status.

The latest version includes a new 'My Site' function, which allows prescribers and dispensers
to search for all prescriptions for their site. (Note: This type of search will not return any
results for locum pharmacists logged on using a Virtual Local Pharmacy (FFFFF) user role
profile, as a virtual organisation doesn't have any prescriptions associated with it.)
The new 'Applied or Pending Cancellation' functions show if a cancellation applies to the
whole prescription or one of the items on it, as well as the reason for the cancellation.
NHS ENGLAND – Electronic Repeat Dispensing Guidance – May 2015
Repeat dispensing with the Electronic Prescription Service provides huge efficiency savings in
general practice. Repeat dispensing used with EPS introduced new functionality and legal
prescription information that differs from the paper process. This guidance enables
prescribers and dispensers to use the functionality effectively.
