PROJECT EXPERIENCE RECORD
Hydrological Studies
Hydrologist: River Wye Flood Mapping Study, Client: Environment Agency.

Undertook a hydrological investigation of the River Wye through the town of High
Wycombe to its confluence with the River Thames at Bourne End. The aim of the
hydrological analysis was to provide flow estimates for a variety of return periods at
several gauging stations within the catchment.
Hydrologist: River Eye Weir Feasibility Study, Client: Natural England.

Undertook a low flow analysis to determine the low and medium river flows (Q95 and Q50
flows) and corresponding water levels for the River Eye and Scalford Brook, both of which are
ungauged at the study area location in order to ensure that the inputs to the ISIS model (used
for testing of options) were realistic.
Hydrologist: ESIA Kribi Port: Client: Government of Cameroon.

A hydrological assessment of the impact of earthworks on the hydrological regime of the
catchment.
Hydrologist: Goulds Brook, Client: Environment Agency

Royal Haskoning was commissioned by the Agency to carry out a channel investigation of the
Goulds Brook in the area of Crewkerne. As part of this study the determination of peak flows
and design hydrographs in Goulds Brook at Crewkerne were required. Responsible for
undertaking the hydrological analysis and preparation of the report submitted to the Agency.
Hydrologist: Beverley Brook Flood Mapping: Client: Environment Agency

The hydrology team leader responsible for the hydrological modelling which was used as
input to the ISIS/TUFLOW hydraulic model of the catchment. This involved liaison with EA
hydrologists and the EA Project Manager. Mr Niven also prepared the Interim Hydrology
Report that was submitted to the EA and contributed to the final modelling report.
Hydrologist, Netherton Village Stage 2: Client: Northumberland County Council.



Derived extreme flow and volume estimates for the Netherton village catchment for the 2, 5,
10, 25, 50, 100 and 200 year return periods.
Determined the existing culvert return period capacity, how often the culvert capacity was
likely to be exceeded in the future and what volumes would need to be stored upstream of the
village to have a meaningful reduction in flood risk downstream.
Undertook a ‘qualitative flood risk assessment’ to determine whether increasing the culverts
flow capacity/conveyance would increase flood risk downstream.
Hydrologist, Preston Brook Flood Study: Client: Environment Agency

Undertook a review of the original flood study and provided recommendations for further
analysis. This involved a flood event analysis (FEA) in order to improve the shape of the
hydrograph and updating the final report.
Flood Risk Assessments/Flood Alleviation Schemes
Scientist, Chelmsford Flood Alleviation Scheme (FAS) Detailed Design, Client: Environment Agency

Prepared a series of Flood Risk Assessments as part of planning applications for the
Chelmsford FAS.
.
Project Manager, Fochabers Flood Event Study, Client: Moray Council

Responsible for undertaking a flood study for the village of Fochabers, which was
commissioned as a result of a flood event in September 2009 causing extensive damage to
the village.
Project Manager, Irvine Harbourside Flood Risk Assessment (FRA). Client: Irvine Bay Regeneration
Company.

Responsible for the preparation of a FRA for a proposed development site at Irvine Harbour
on behalf of the Irvine Bay Urban Regeneration Company and the developer, Urban Splash.
This involved extreme water level and wave overtopping analysis as well as an assessment
of surface water runoff and the possible development of flood mitigation measures.
Additional work was undertaken to determine if the dredging of the entrance channel would
have a negative effect on the degree of wave overtopping affecting the site.
Project Manager, Barmuckity BP1 Site Flood Risk Assessment (FRA), Client: Springfield Properties
PLC.

Responsible for the delivery of a FRA for a proposed development site downstream of Elgin
adjacent to the River Lossie.
Project Manager, Helix Flood Risk Assessment (FRA), Client: Falkirk Council

Project Manager of a detailed FRA for the Helix development located between Falkirk and
Grangemouth. Responsible for leading a team of hydraulic modellers, hydrologists and GIS
specialists in preparing a FRA for 300ha development. Specific work included 1D and 2D
hydraulic modelling, fluvial and coastal flood risk mapping, and consultation with statutory
bodies and the Client.
Project Manager, Teignbridge Strategic Flood Risk Assessment (SFRA), Client: Environment Agency

Responsible for the delivery of the SFRA to Teignbridge District Council, involving preparation
of final report, and liaison with Council and Environment Agency.
Project Manager, Elgin flood Alleviation Scheme (FAS), Client: The Moray Council

Responsible for co-ordinating the additional modelling work requested by the Reporter of the
Elgin FAS Public Inquiry. The Elgin FAS is the largest flood alleviation scheme promoted in
Scotland to date, with an estimated whole life cost of £65 million. Responsible for delivering of
the final report submitted to the Reporter.
Project Manager, Kilbirnie Flood Study, Client: North Ayrshire Council

Responsible for the delivery of the final report to the local authority and Technical Lead for the
hydrological and hydraulic modelling analysis using the existing ISIS model. This study
allowed North Ayrshire Council to have a better understanding of flood risk affecting the town
of Kilbirnie and the need for a flood prevention scheme to protect the town.
Scientist, Dragley Beck Feasibility Study, Client: Environment Agency

Member of the project team that undertook hydraulic modelling and options study for the town
of Ulverston, to identify a preferred approach and potential solutions for sustainable flood risk
management over the next 100 years.
Hydrologist, River Soar Study, Client: Environment Agency

Member of the hydrology team that undertook a hydrological study of the River Soar
catchment. Involved preparing inflows for use in calibration of the hydraulic model and
estimates of design peak flows were required using the FEH methodology.
Hydrologist, Sedgeberrow Flood Alleviation Scheme, Client: Environment Agency

The aim of the project was to identify possible solutions to alleviate flooding and offer
protection against flooding for residential properties within the village of Sedgeberrow.
Responsible for undertaking the hydrological analysis, updating the hydrological and hydraulic
models (including model calibration and verification) and assessment of flood alleviation
options.
Water Resources
Hydrologist, Water Resource Plan 2008, Client: Scottish Water

Scottish Water had a regulatory requirement to produce a Water Resource Plan (WRP) in
accordance with guidelines produced by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA)
during 2008. Member of team responsible for determining the catchment yield for a number of
potential sites across Scotland for gauged and ungauged watercourses. This was based on a
level of service of 1 in 30 years that Scottish Water intended to provide to its customers.
