BILINGUAL REGISTRATION NEWS Registering for 2016-2017 Classes Return your registration form to your counselor’s office by Tuesday, January 12th. You will have an individual appointment with your counselor to review your course selections, credits, GPA and career plans. These appointments will occur throughout the month of January during your lunch period in the tutoring room off of the commons. Bilingual Program: All students in the Bilingual Program are required to take ESL English and Spanish Language Arts. To exit the Bilingual Program, a student must score at least a 5.0 Composite score, a 4.2 Reading, and a 4.2 Writing on the Access test. Students will be placed in either bilingual or sheltered courses in academic subject areas based upon performance on the MODEL test. Students who earn at least a 3.5 Literacy composite are eligible to begin instruction in English. Counselors will make placements in Math, Science , and Social Studies courses based on these scores. Grade Classifications: To be a sophomore next year, you will need 12 credits. To be a junior next year, you will need 24 credits. To be a senior next year, you will need 34 credits. Choosing Courses: All bilingual students must meet high school graduation requirements to receive a high school diploma. Please consider these requirements as you select your courses which are listed on page 26 of the High School Planning Guide (blue book). See chart below for a guideline of what you should sign up for. Sophomore Year ESL English Math Science PE/Health Spanish Language Arts 2 Pathway Elective Elective Junior Year ESL English Math Science US History PE Spanish Language Arts 3 Elective Senior Year ESL English Government/Economics PE Spanish Language Arts 4 Pathway Elective Elective Elective ESL English: Students are initially placed into an ESL English course based on ACCESS or MODEL test scores. Students currently in the Bilingual Program will advance to the next ESL class unless they fail. In which case the student would need to repeat the failed ESL level. Spanish Language Arts: Students will be placed into Spanish Language Arts based upon their grade level/year in school. Drivers Education will be offered to students through PE (one quarter is Driver’s Ed, one quarter is Team Sports). You must also pass at least 8 classes in the 2 semester prior to enrolling in driver’s education, according to state law. The course has a $250 fee. PE/Health: All students must select a PE option unless they qualify for a PE exemption option. PE exemptions are available number of eligible reasons. Exemption form must be signed by parent and returned by January 12th. A semester of Health is required for graduation. This is usually paired with a semester PE option during the sophomore year. Data Portfolio Sheets: You have been provided with an individualized sheet of your test scores, grades, and teacher recommendations. Use this sheet to help you make good decisions about the courses you would like to take for next year. Current Freshmen will need to choose an Academy and a Pathway. Pages 4-25 of the High School Planning Guide can help you. Also look at the course options for each Pathway on the long white course offerings sheet. Think out your interests and future career plans. In which area can you see yourself taking courses for the next 3 years of high school? BAMIT—Business, Arts, Modern World Languages, and Information Technology EMITT—Engineering, Manufacturing, and Industrial Trades Technology HPS—Human and Public Services HS—Health Sciences Pathway Electives vs. Other Electives Pathway Elective: This is an elective that you will take within your academy. You must take a minimum of ONE pathway elective each year. For each year of high school, you will take an elective class within your Academy Pathway. This sequence of courses is designed to help make you more prepared for a specific career area. Elective: Any other elective you choose based on personal interest or preparation for beyond high school. Your global electives may be within your chosen Academy, but they can be outside too. Repeating failed courses: If you have failed a course that is a graduation requirement you may make up the failed course at Guilford (if space is available) or through night school or summer school. See your counselor if you are interested in night school or summer school registration. Cost is $170 per course. Deadline to register for Spring Night School is January 7th. Minimum Coursework Recommended for College Admission 4 years English 3 years math including Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2 or College Algebra 3 years science 3 years social studies 2 years of the same foreign language (or art, music, theater, or CTE courses in some cases) Rigorous full course schedule Courses requiring an application process: Ask your counselor for application and procedures. Newspaper or Yearbook Medical Science (off-site, requires own transportation) Advance Now programs (offered at RVC campuses, requires own transportation) Dual Credit at RVC (requires own transportation) Sports Eligibility Students must pass 5 classes the previous semester to participate in a sport. For example, to participate in a Fall or Winter Sport next school year, you must pass 5 courses spring semester. Students must be passing a minimum of 5 classes each week during the sports season to remain eligible. Pathways Questionnaire: If you feel like there is a pathway that you would have been interested in, but it wasn’t offered at Guilford…please fill out the questionnaire and return to your counselor. We want to provide opportunities for students when there is an interest. Request to Change your Academy (for current sophomores only): If you feel that you have made the wrong choice in Academy, you can apply to change Academies. The change would take place at the end of sophomore year (as you must finish the courses in your current schedule). To apply to change, you must complete the “Change of Academy Request Form” and get all the appropriate signatures. Please keep in mind that you may be behind in coursework for your new chosen pathway within the new Academy and may have to double-up on pathway coursework to finish the sequence of courses in your pathway.
