School of Integrative Biology Risk Assessment Sheet ZOOL2029 Spotlighting Excursion Section 1 Description Activity Title: Spotlighting excursion Location: Karawatha Forest Park, Brisbane Description of Activities: Students will be taken on a guided walk through Karawatha Forest Park after dark. The purpose of this exercise is to show students some of the nocturnal fauna inhabiting bushland in and around Brisbane. Students will be following tutors while spotlighting fauna along established tracks through the forest. Tutors will be handling frogs and geckos using plastic bags and showing these to students in plastic clip-seal bags. Otherwise students are not to interfere with fauna in any way. Eye injury from branches and twigs Remote Critical Medium Students will remain on established tracks Falls, strains and sprains when traversing uneven ground Occasional Minor Low Sturdy footwear to be worn and due care exercised when walking in the dark. Students to carry a flashlight to light there way through the bush. Bites and stings from insects Remote Major Medium Enclosed shoes, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt to be worn in the bush. Watch out for wasp’s nests in vegetation and check clothes and body for ticks after working in bush. Snake bite Remote Major Low Keep a safe distance from snakes. Do not handle any snakes. Wear enclosed shoes, thick socks and long pants when working in bushland. Tutors will carry a snake bandage when leading students through the bush Vehicle accidents (normal road conditions) Remote Major Low Lightening strike Remote Critical Medium 2 Snake bites are to be treated using the pressure- immobilisation technique shown in class. Ensure private vehicles are roadworthy. Drivers/ Cyclists are to observe and obey Queensland Road Transport Regulations. If storms are threatening this excursion will be cancelled. 3
