2. Proposed Academic Plan (next page) to complete certificate requirements. Include documentation of
language proficiency and economic coursework if completed somewhere other than Yale.
3. Personal Statement relating the certificate to your degree program and career plans (not to exceed two
typewritten pages). Discuss how specific courses and language proficiency are relevant to the Certificate.
4. A copy of your most recent Yale transcript.
5. Signature of eligibility from your DGS or Professional School Officer.
Applications must be submitted no later than the beginning of the penultimate term of study. For further

Students must demonstrate proficiency of a major world language – other than English – relevant to development
studies or to the region on which the candidate is focusing, with two years of language study at Yale or the
equivalent; translation exams are not sufficient.

III. Economics Proficiency:
Students must demonstrate proficiency in the basic concepts of economics, either by demonstrating substantial prior
coursework in economics or by taking a graduate or professional level economics course at Yale. (A basic course in
