Using a lesson study CPD approach Focus: Raising attainment of students with MLD Lesson study steps Step Activity Notes Resources 1 Analyse assessment and observation information to sharpen the focus. Decide who you can work with to carry out the lesson study. Agree on the focus, methods, roles and rules. Find out what has worked for other students and teachers, look at the research. Decide on the focus group of students. Build a picture of progress and attainment in your selected class/teaching group by gathering evidence. Identify colleagues to work on the lesson study. Observation sheet Planning sheet Collaboratively plan the process and methods for the lesson study. We need to build on best practice. What information What research evidence is available? Planning sheet This will be the selection of students which the evaluation team has requested. Student data sheet 6 Together plan a study lesson with the focus group in mind We need to plan the first study lesson: what do the children need to learn next and how will this be taught combining the research findings. Planning sheet & Lesson plan sheet 7 Teach, and together observe and assess the learning of focus group Gather and review evidence. What progress and or barriers to learning do they encounter? 8 Review learning in light of planned learning outcome Together, plan, teach and observe further study lessons. Decide how to share the learning and disseminate the approach to others The Lesson Study Group needs to analyse evidence from the study lesson and the lesson review. Plan the next lessons to extend or explore our ideas. Evidence planning (pictures, film, audio, copies of work) Lesson review sheet 2 3 4 5 9 10 We need to review our own learning, update our learning log and identify key findings to share with others. Research sheet Next steps and Planning sheet Artefact planning guide Progress check The Lesson Study Process Create an artefact and share the learning Step 1 Observation and initial assessment sheet. I need to decide on my starting point for using lesson study as an approach. Why did I want to be involved in this project, what is it that concerns me about the learning of students defined as having MLD? Some students defined as having MLD: My concerns: My observations and questions I need to build a picture of students’ progress and attainment in.................... by gathering evidence. What information is already available, to help me plan how to make the best use of a lesson study approach? I would like to accelerate progress in....................... Step 2 & 3 planning sheet Step 2: Plan who is in the lesson study group – which colleagues can and will work with me on the lesson study. Name School Role Step 3: Agree on the focus, methods, rules and responsibilities What do we want the outcomes to be? What will be the success criteria? What are the questions we hope to answer? How will we collect evidence and record our progress? How will we capture our learning and create a log? Lesson Study Role Step 3 – Timeline planning Activity Proposed date Initials of organiser Others to be involved/informed Step 4 Research sheet – what has worked for other teachers and students? We need to build on best practice. What information can our colleagues contribute? What can we learn from the students? What research evidence is available? References and specific focus Which particular approaches are beginning to emerge as the ones we would like to build into our lesson study? Step 5 – Student Data Sheet The evaluation team would like to monitor the progress of the following types of students from each class: 2 students defined as having MLD, 1 student defined as having SEN, 1 student with low attainment and 1 student who is of average ability. Student Name Learning Category Notes Step 6: Together plan a study lesson with the focus group in mind We need to plan the first study lesson: what do the students need to learn next and how will this be taught? Learning Teaching Planning and resources Step 6 Lesson Plan Class name and key stage Curriculum / teaching area Intended learning outcomes Lesson study focus Plan for evidence collection Resources required Time Teaching Activity Student Activity Evidence / observation focus Step 7: Teach, and together observe and assess the learning of focus group We need to gather and review evidence that will help us find out what and how the focus children learn during the study lesson, what progress they make and what barriers to learning they encounter. DURING THE LESSON AFTER THE LESSON Step 8: Review learning in light of planned learning outcome The Lesson Study Group needs to analyse information gathered during the study lesson as well as additional information from the lesson review, to evaluate how successfully the students learnt. This will mean a) discussing the lesson with the students in the focus group and b) meeting to discuss the lesson observations in detail, as soon after the lesson as possible. What did we find out? What progress are we making towards answering our initial questions about progress in ? Step 9: Together, plan, teach and observe further study lessons We need to plan the next lessons that will be used for lesson study to extend or explore our ideas, test our hypotheses, confirm our conclusions and build our evidence base. Step 10: Decide how to share learning and disseminate the approach to others We need to review our own learning, update our learning log and identify key findings to share with others.
