The condition of Sculpture as Object of Passion
Superstitions – solo show Bogdan Rata
Nasui collection & gallery, Bucharest, Romania
Sep. 23rd – Nov. 23rd 2015
The condition of sculpture as object of passion: new artworks of the Romanian sculptor
Bogdan Rata are being exhibited at Nasui collection & gallery, Bucharest, Romania in
autumn 2015.
The new body of artworks of Bogdan Rata, grouped under the title ”Superstitions”, reveals a
certain type of flux which goes beyond the present reality, with its effects being enhanced in
a primitive, almost religious way. Integrated as installations and made in relation to different
raw elements like water, sand, glass or soil, the new sculptures of Bogdan Rata
create balancing to and fro meanings, from future science to dark magic and back.
”The ambiguity of the characters, the anonymity of the covered body, the uncertainty of the
identity, all shape a particular mystery around the sculptures. On the other hand, they give
the spectator a certain power: they leave space, in order for the viewer to complete the
artworks with their own visions and stories.” (Bogdan Rata).
The art objects are crafted with a realistic perfection, based on scientific understanding of
the world. But this approach is troubled by the meaningful gestures of the body
elements which introduce emotions and energies related to life and death.
”The real anatomy is transformed and reinterpreted; it is like the composition of my sculpture
bears in mind the accidental amputations of the Greek and Roman sculptures during the past
thousands of years. This fact symbolically resonates with the very amplification of my
sculptures’ anatomic functions.” (Bogdan Rata).
