Fashion in the Middle Ages and Paris: Life and Luxury
J. Paul Getty Museum
1200 Getty Center Drive, Los Angeles CA 90049
Saturday, August 6, 2011
(Limited to 40 Participants – Register Now!)
Join CSA for insider tours of two fashion-related temporary exhibitions at the J. Paul Getty Museum in
Los Angeles. Enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch with the exhibition curators in the museum’s Robert Irwindesigned gardens. After lunch, feel free to stay and spend the rest of the day exploring The Getty’s
extensive collections on your own.
In the Middle Ages, clothing was integral to identifying one’s place in the world. People were highly
skilled at reading the meaning of fashion, which is reflected throughout the painted pages of
illuminated manuscripts. Themes in the manuscripts exhibition Fashion in the Middle Ages range
from the extravagant cost of clothing worn by the elite, to styles and fabrics permitted by custom and
law, to the inventiveness that embellishes historical depictions of fashion. Curator of Manuscripts
Elizabeth Morrison will be your guide as you explore the evolution of medieval dress and textiles
through illuminated manuscripts.
Paris: Life & Luxury evokes the rich material ambiance of Paris during the mid-eighteenth century. It
brings together a wide variety of objects—furniture and clocks, gowns and jewelry, tapestries and fans,
candlesticks and firedogs, musical instruments and games—all from elite society in Paris, the fashion
and cultural epicenter of Europe at the time. Curator of Sculpture and Decorative Arts Charissa
Bremer-David and exhibition catalogue contributor Kimberly Chrisman-Campbell will unveil the
lifestyles of the rich and famous of the Louis XV period.
