The Magill Department of Anaesthesia, Intensive Care & Pain Management
The Magill Department of Anaesthesia is a combined NHS and academic department, named after Sir
Ivan Whiteside Magill, who was a pioneer of British anaesthesia and is best known for developing
tracheal intubation and pulmonary anaesthesia.
The NHS Magill Department is led by Dr Jackie Durbridge. There are 30 NHS consultants within the
department with separate consultant rotas covering Intensive Care, General Surgical/Obstetric
anaesthesia and Paediatric/Neonatal Anaesthesia. The Medical Simulation Centre is an integral
component of this multi-disciplinary training unit. Some of the NHS anaesthetic staff have a sessional
commitment to the Centre.
The academic Magill Department is now part of the Section of Anaesthetics, Pain Medicine and
Intensive Care (APMIC) at Imperial College London, led by Prof Masao Takata who is the Magill
Chair in Anaesthetics at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. The Section brings together clinical and
basic scientists with a wide range of research interests and an emphasis on producing high-quality,
high impact basic and translational research. The Section’s strengths are derived from the wide range
of members; from basic scientists, immunologists and physiologists, BSc, MSc, MD and PhD students
to clinical academic foundation trainees, academic clinical fellows (ACFs), clinical lecturers and
consultant anaesthetists, intensivists and pain doctors. The Section is mainly located at the Chelsea &
Westminster (C&W) Campus (adjacent to the clinical department) but also has members at South

PROFILE OF CHELSEA AND WESTMINSTER HOSPITAL NHS FOUNDATION
TRUST
Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust aims to be a hospital of choice for patients
and an employer of choice for staff.
The Trust is also a main teaching centre for Imperial College School of Medicine.
The Trust provides a full range of general medical and surgical services for the local community, and
specialist services for people wherever they live. St Stephen’s Centre, next door to the hospital, houses
most of the Trust’s specialist HIV and sexual health services. Sexual health outreach services are also
provided at the Victoria Clinic, SW1, the West London Centre for Sexual Health at Charing Cross
Hospital and in a range of community settings.
Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, which was opened by the Queen in 1993, offers a uniquely modern
hospital environment. Its light and airy modern design is built around a vast atrium - one of the largest in
Europe - and incorporates a stunning array of visual arts, which help create a healing and uplifting
atmosphere enjoyed by patients, staff and visitors.
The Trust has enhanced its reputation for high quality care and good management by gaining Foundation
Trust status in October 2006 and earning a rating of ‘Excellent’ for quality of Services and use of
resources in the Healthcare Commission’s annual performance ratings, published in October 2007.
Chelsea & Westminster also prides itself on being a clean, safe hospital – the Trust was rated ‘Good’ for
both hospital hygiene and standards of hospital food in the national Patient Environment Action Team
(PEAT) statistics published in November 2007 and rates of healthcare associated infections are almost
half the national average.
Our services are often recognised nationally – in 2006 our recruitment and retention strategy to reduce
midwife vacancy rates was short-listed for the Health Service Journal Awards, a scheme to allow sexual
health patients to request clinic appointments via the Trust website was short-listed for the NHS
Innovators Awards, and we were rated as one of the top 26 hospitals in England for the care of patients
aged 50+ according to research by Saga/Dr Foster.
Our reputation as a good place to work has been reinforced by our achievement of Improving Working
Lives Practice Plus status in 2005 – this is only awarded to NHS trusts that demonstrate high standards
in areas including flexible working, and training and development.
The Trust is committed to developing staff in order to improve patient care – a Trust-wide customer
service programme was launched in autumn 2006 to enhance the level of customer care we provide.
