MEDIA RELEASE February 22, 2006 SIX MONTHS OLD ANGUS HEIFER MAKES RECORD $38,000 A six months old Angus heifer, The Grange A180, sold for an Australian record price of $38,000 for an Angus female at The Grange, Hamilton, Vic, sale on February 21. The previous record was $34,000 paid at the Millah Murrah sale in 2003 for a mature cow. The previous record for an unjoined heifer was $26,000 at the Comfort Hill dispersal 2003. Buyers of the calf, the result of an imported US embryo, were the Paterson family’s Vermont Angus at Penshurst, Vic, and Alpine Angus from Porepunkah, Vic, conducted by Jim Delaney and Willie and Joanne Milne. The record breaker will be on display at the Alpine annual sale on March 23. The Grange A180 is a daughter of the US Angus legend, Davis Yr Blackbird 558H, whose progeny have grossed more than $US3 million. At the 2004 Riverbend Ranch sale, a half share interest in this prolific brood cow sold for $US240, 000. Riverbend Ranch manager David Brown, said Australia’s new record holder is the daughter of two of the Angus breed’s best for muscling and maternal genetics, the 036 son BR New Dimension 7127 and Blackbird 558H. “We have found this particular mating has consistently produced progeny that are not only breed leaders for muscling, but also for marbling,” he said. Ten 2004 born full siblings to the record breaker had an IMF% ratio average of 117 and a Rib Eye average of 108 based on ultra-sound measurements. These included Blackbird 4515 with the 13th highest ultrasound Rib Eye EPD among all non-parent Angus females in the US who sold at the 2004 Riverbed sale for $US30,000. From: Angus Australia.
