SA SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS
10 – 16 DECEMBER 2012 - UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA
1. INTRODUCTION
The SA Schools Championships are a culmination of the SA Schools League
programme which was launched by the Ministers of Sport and Recreation and
Basic Education on 28 March 2012. At the beginning of 2012, all schools were
requested to register to participate in the school sport league programme through
a circular sent out by the Department of Basic Education. 13 782 Schools
registered to participate in the league programme in the following codes:
Athletics, Netball, Football, Cricket, Rugby, Gymnastics, Volleyball, Basketball
and Chess.
The league programme was delivered by the Provincial Departments of Sport,
Arts, Culture and Recreation and Provincial Departments of Basic Education in
partnership with Provincial Federations and School Sport Code Committees. The
delivery of the SA Schools National Championships is coordinated by SRSA,
DBE, Federations, National School Sport Code Committees, City of Tshwane
Gauteng Department of Sport and Recreation and Gauteng Department of
Education.
Schools competed at 4 levels: intra schools, inter schools, district and province.
The winning school teams at the provincial level qualify to participate in the SA
Schools’ Championship.
2. OBJECTIVES OF THE CHAMPIONSHIPS
The aim of the programme is:
2.1 To create access for all learners in all schools to participate in sport
The SA Schools Championships is an incentive for schools to participate in
the league programme, thereby ensuring that scholars engage in continuous

sport programmes and the benefits thereof. These include but are not limited
to social cohesion, reducing crime and creating active citizens.
2.2 To increase the pool of talented athletes that feed the national teams,
thereby increasing the chances of international success.
Federations will deploy talent scouts to the SA Schools’ Championships to
identify athletes with potential to be place in the national pool of talent.
SRSA will offer support to develop the identified talented athletes through the
Sport Focus Schools programme that will be rolled out in 2013. Schools with
infrastructure to support and nurture talented athletes will be approached to
offer places to the identified athletes. SRSA will offer sport bursaries to the
athletes to further develop their sporting skills within the sport focus schools.
The schools in turn will receive support to ensure that the best support is
provided to the athletes.
