Abstract
Multiculturality plays a key-role in the way texts and talks are studied; the existence of
various trends in discourse analysis around the world is a condition of its development.
Although from the eighties on Discourse Analysis has been subject to a process of
globalisation, it is still divided into various trends that were originally rooted in cultural
intellectual traditions, but spread out to other cultures and countries. This paper aims at
presenting one of them, French Discourse Analysis. It begins with describing its origin and its
main characteristics (“French” tendencies). Special attention is paid to its attitude towards
subjectivity, which is tightly connected with the European theories of linguistic “enunciation”.
As many French discourse analysts do not focus on the coherence of texts or genres, a
distinction is made between “topical” (types, genres...) and non-topical” categories
(“discursive formations”, “networks”). Hence we are allowed to introduce three concepts:
“enunciation scene”,“ethos” and “aphorisation”, which are illuminated by various examples.
Bio-note
Dominique Maingueneau is professor of linguistics at the University of Paris-Est Créteil.
His research from the 1970s is focused on French linguistics and discourse analysis. He
published many books in the latter area of study since his Introduction to the methods of
discourse analysis (Paris, Hachette, 1976); he co-edited a Dictionary ofdiscourse analysis
(Paris, Seuil, 2002). His research associates a pragmatic outlook on discourse with linguistic
«enunciation» theories and M. Foucault's Archeology. For a few years he has been working in
the field of "self-constituting discourses" (philosophical, religious, scientific, literary...), that
legitimate the whole discursive production.
