DEKADENCE BOHEMIAN LANDS, 1880-1914 TOWN HALL OF BRUSSELS - MUSÉE PROVINCIAL FÉLICIEN ROPS DE NAMUR PRESS COMMUNIQUE A double exhibition. A touching encounter, intimate and moving; a selection of 300 works from major Czech museums and private collections: paintings, drawings, sculptures and photographs of an impressive charisma. In European Art, and in particular in the Bohemian Lands at the end of the 19 th Century, some artists, bruised by a society they judged too materialistic, abandoned themselves to their inner demons, nourishing on apocalyptic phantoms and willingly identifying themselves with the sad destiny of tragic characters like Jesus, Judas or Hamlet. This fin de siècle unease will be the theme of the exhibition at the Brussels City hall while the macabre eroticism inhabited by femme fatale and other unbridled demons, appealing and disquieting at the same time, are to be seen at the Musée provincial Félicien Rops in Namur. František Drtikol, Karel Hlavacek, František Kobliha, Jan Konůpek, Frantisek Kupka, Gabriel Max, Alfons Mucha, Jan Preisler, Max Pirner, Jakub Schineder, Max Svabinsky, Josef Váchal, Franz von Bayros, and others guide the visitor through two exceptional paths where pleasure and questioning rival with excitement and dismay. Exhibition organised by the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Brussels and the Musée provincial Félicien Rops in Namur, in partnership with Arbor Vitae, with the support of Commissariat général aux Relations internationales de la Communauté française de Belgique, within the framework of its agreement that links the Communauté française Wallonie-Bruxelles and the Czech Republic.
