Summary
1. This Welsh Health Circular formally publishes the Welsh Assembly Government “Designed for
the Management of Type 1 Diabetes in Children and Young People in Wales” Consensus
Guidelines – Standards 5 & 6 Diabetes National Service Framework for Wales Delivery Strategy
Background
2. This document has been structured around Standards 5 & 6 of the Diabetes National Service
Framework for Wales Delivery Strategy to ensure equity of services and management of children
and young people with Type 1 diabetes in Wales.
3. In the twelve NSF Standards children and young people are referred to together with adults, each
aspect of the patient journey is defined and standards of care have been established based on
the best available evidence against which the quality and effectiveness of care can be measured.
Standards 5 & 6 relate specifically to children and young people. Within each standard, key
interventions are set out to define the models of patient care and of service delivery.
For Action and Implementation
4. In order to direct and guide activity, “Designed for the Management of Type 1 Diabetes in
Children and Young People in Wales” is intended to be a strategic framework containing specific
implementation targets that must be delivered by March 2013.
5. The Brecon Group, Consultants in Paediatrics/Diabetes/ Endocrinology, Paediatric Diabetes
Specialist Nurses, Paediatric Specialist Dietitians, Specialist Registrars, a source of detailed and
specialist knowledge, facilitated by the Welsh Assembly Government met to develop the
Management Guidelines with a view to ensure that the action plans of Standards 5 & 6 of the
Diabetes National Service Framework for Wales are implemented and that equity of services
across Wales is achieved for the Management of Children and Young people with Type 1
Diabetes in Wales. The Brecon Group also have a valuable role to play in being responsible for
the data collection and recording of all children with Diabetes in Wales, funded by the Welsh
Assembly Government. The All Wales data appears in the National Audit Document.
