General Introduction:

The mission of the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) is to bring underutilized and new generation vaccines to the world’s poorest populations. To this end, the IVI includes two science divisions: the Laboratory

Science Division (LSD) and the Translational Research Division (TRD). The focus of the LSD, in part, is to develop new low-cost, easy to administer, developing-country produced vaccines. The LSD includes a BSL-

3+ laboratory. The purpose of the TRD is to accelerate the introduction of new candidate vaccines into developing countries. Currently, TRD staff are planning or conducting clinical trials of oral cholera vaccines, typhoid fever vaccines and vaccine demonstration projects in Africa and Asia. TRD has 35 scientific and administrative staff and is supported by a Data Management and Statistics Unit and a Policy and Economic

Research Unit. These studies and projects are funded through Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Welcome

Trust, LG Electronics, SIDA, and others.

The IVI is seeking a Senior Scientist (Medical Degree and/or PhD) with ten or more years experience conducting clinical and epidemiology studies. A Senior Scientist is the highest ranking scientific staff at the

IVI. The incumbent will work closely with the Deputy Director General to provide scientific direction to staff to ensure the highest quality of scientific accomplishments while expanding the number of studies and projects and diversifying funding agencies. Qualifications include significant contributions to published research, expert knowledge of infectious diseases and vaccines, record of external funding, and distinction in mentoring other scientists. Frequent site visits to developing countries, especially in Africa and Asia will be required.

Specific Responsibilities:

The incumbents will work closely with the TRD Director to:

1) ensure high quality, scientific accomplishments by providing technical expertise for planned and current clinical trials, epidemiological studies and demonstration projects especially with the cholera program that includes clinical trials in Asia and Africa of live attenuated and whole cell killed cholera vaccines

2) expand the number of studies and projects and diversifying donor agencies by developing new research agendas and product development plans and submitting grant and funding applications as principal and co-investigator

3) identify hindrances to achieving program milestones and deliverables by conducting site visits to review study/project implementation and by consulting with collaborators, country investigators, and field staff

4) ensure TRD’s mission by assisting the Director to develop a strategic vision and agenda based on strengthens of TRD and by identifying scientific opportunities and needs

5) increase the quantity and quality of peer reviewed publications and presentations by working with TRD scientists and mentoring TRD scientists

6) develop strong relationships with donor agencies by communicating with donors through meetings, reports, and conference calls

7) share knowledge and experience of TRD by suggesting and implementing international conferences and symposium to be held at IVI and providing leadership for IVI’s annual

Vaccinology Course

8) other activities as required

Qualifications:

The candidate should have MD or Ph D degree in medical/public health related majors. More than 10 years of experience conducting in clinical and epidemiological studies required. The candidate is willing to travel internationally.
