ACADEMIC HONOR CODE The University of North Carolina at Wilmington is committed to the proposition that the pursuit of truth requires the presence of honesty among all involved. It is therefore this institution’s stated policy that no form of dishonesty among its faculty or students will be tolerated. Although all members of the university community are encouraged to report occurrences of dishonesty, honesty is principally the responsibility of each individual. Academic dishonesty takes many forms, from blatant acts of cheating, stealing or other misdeeds to the more subtle forms of plagiarism, all of which are totally out of place in an institution of higher learning. Reporting and adjudication procedures have been developed to enforce the policy of academic integrity, to ensure justice, and to protect individual rights. Complete details may be found in the current Student Handbook, Code of Student Life and in the Faculty Handbook. Required Texts: o Organic Chemistry, John McMurry, 6th Edition, Brooks/Cole, 2004. o Study Guide and Solutions Manual for Organic Chemistry, Susan McMurry, 6th Edition, Brooks/Cole 2004 o Molecular Model sets Attendance Policy: Although lecture attendance is not officially monitored, attendance at every lecture is expected and to your distinct advantage. If you miss a lecture, it is YOUR responsibility to obtain the lecture material presented. Exams and Grading: There will be 4 hourly exams and a comprehensive final (100 points each). There will be NO make-up exams. An absence at an hourly exam will result in a grade of zero for that exam, and will count as your “dropped exam” grade. Final grades will be based on your performance on the hourly exams and final exam. Tentative Grading Scale: A: 90-100 B: 80-89 C: 70-79 D: 60-69 E: <60 Federal Americans with Disabilities Act: If you have a disability and need reasonable accommodation in order to participate fully in this course, you should inform the instructor of this fact in writing within the first week of class or as soon as possible. If you have not already done so, you must register with the Office of Disability Services in Westside Hall and obtain a copy of your Accommodations Letter. You should then meet with your instructor to make mutually agreeable arrangements based on the recommendations of the Accommodations Letter. Classroom Courtesy: o Recordings of my lecture are NOT PERMITTED. Any evidence of this will result in the student’s dismissal from class. o All pagers and cell phones must be turned off before entering class. o Students should be on time and plan to stay for the entire class. On the rare occasions when you may be delayed, I encourage you to come late rather than to miss the class completely. Study Hints: o Come to class and pay attention! o Try to read the chapter before the lecture and stay ahead! o Make sure you clearly understand the basic material and build a good foundation. o Learn how things work. Don’t simply memorize things. o Work homework problems! The problems listed by each chapter on this syllabus are representative of the types of problems that may appear on exams. These will not be collected or graded, but you should check your own work using Appendix E in your textbook, or using the solutions manual that accompanies the textbook. o Feel free to stop by my office during a designated office hour, or make appointments to discuss questions. I can also answer many questions over email. o As a general rule, each lecture would require at least 2-3 hours of study outside of class in order to achieve success. Cramming the night before an exam is very unlikely to yield good results.
