Remember, the FAFSA is the starting point for nearly all financial assistance with your college costs. Any student planning to attend college, needs to apply for financial aid through FAFSA.ed.gov. MCC will be hosting FAFSA night for EMHS and WMHS seniors on Tuesday, Feb 17th from 6:00-8:00pm. A financial aid expert will have a brief presentation and then be available to answer questions. The computer lab will be open and staff will be available to offer help completing FAFSA. Bring your 2015 completed tax returns if possible. Bring in your college acceptance letters as you receive them. We want to display the colleges that our seniors have been accepted to. Also, bring in any recognitions or scholarship award information to your guidance counselor so you can be recognized during Senior Awards. Listed below, are the Scholarships currently available. You should apply for all scholarships for which you meet eligibility requirements! Please check our website frequently for updates. NC State Employees Credit Union “People Helping People” Scholarship: $2,500 renewable for 4 years of undergraduate study. Must be US citizen and NC resident, must have at least a 2.5 GPA, demonstrate character, leadership, integrity and community involvement. Students must plan to attend one of the 16 UNC universities. You must write an essay on how you have exemplified the People Helping People philosophy. Applications are available in student services. The WMHS Scholarship Committee will select the recipient. Applications should be returned to your school counselor by the close of school on Thursday, April 2nd, 2015. George Andrews Scholarship:Two scholarships available to WMHS seniors only. One for $4,000/yr for four years, and another for $3,000/yr for four years. The application is available in the guidance department. For more information, visit http://www.nccommunityfoundation.org/forms/scholarships. Application Deadline: March 20th, 2015. Golden Leaf Foundation Scholarships: $3000/ yr. for four years. Must reside in a participating county (Montgomery is included) and enroll in a public or private university in North Carolina. To access the application go to CFNC.org/goldenleaf. Deadline is March 1st, 2015. The Friends In Focus Excellence Scholarship: The Friends In Focus Group, an organization working in Montgomery County supporting communities, will award a scholarship annually in the amount of $500 to a deserving minority senior attending West Montgomery High School. The scholarship is support for minority students in their quest to receive a college education. The scholarship is for one year only and limited to undergraduate studies. Applications will be accepted from December 23rd to March 15th. Qualifications and procedures are described below: 1. Eligible minority applicants that reside in Montgomery county, attend West Montgomery High School and a member of the senior class. 2. Demonstrated leadership in school work or activities outside of school. Volunteer work in his or her community is a plus. 3. Applicants must be accepted by an accredited 2 or 4 year college or university or vocational- technical school, for the fall semester following high school graduation. 4. The age of the applicant must be 24 or under 5. Applicants must have at least a GPA of 2.75 by the fall semester during which the scholarship application is filed. Applications are available in student services. Application Deadline is Thursday, April 2nd, 2015. The Susie L. Little Community Service Scholarship: The Friends In Focus Group, an organization working in Montgomery County, NC supporting communities, and in conjunction with the family of Susie L. Little, will award a scholarship annually in the amount of $1000 to a deserving minority senior at West Montgomery High School. The scholarship is to support minority students in their quest to receive a college education. The award is named in honor of the late Ms. Susie L. Little, a longtime resident and community supporter in Mount Gilead, NC. Ms. Little was known for her demonstrated concern for others, a can-do attitude and a caring spirit. The scholarship is for one year only and limited to undergraduate study. Applications will be accepted from December 23rd to March 15th. Qualifications and procedures are described below: 1. Eligible minority applicants reside in Montgomery County, attend West Montgomery High School and a member of the senior class 2. Applicant should have experience working in his or her community as a volunteer and leadership in this area is a plus. 3. Applicants must be accepted by an accredited 2 or 4 year college, university or vocational- technical school, for the fall semester following high school graduation. 4. The age of the applicant is 24 or under 5. Applicants must have at least a GPA of 2.75 by the fall semester during which the scholarship application is filed. Applications are available in student services. Application Deadline is April 2nd, 2015. Mount Gilead Civitan’s Scholarship - “Ring of Honor”. This scholarship is implemented in honor of the long time, devoted members. To honor their service a $500.00 scholarship will be given each year to a senior male or female graduating from West Montgomery High School. Applications are available in student services. The following criteria must be met. Deadline: Friday, April 17th, 2015 Senior at WMHS Mount Gilead resident (27306 zip code) Legal resident attending a certified two or four year college. GPA – minimum 3.0 (weighted) ECU Maynor Scholarship - $3000/yr. – Maynor family is offering a $3000 scholarship renewable for four years to a WMHS or EMHS senior that has been accepted to ECU with a high school GPA under 3.5. The senior must be employed while in high school and show a strong work ethic. More information is available at www.ecu.edu/cet. UNC-Greensboro Guarantee: Tuition assistance, academic support /resources for qualifying students. Must be accepted to UNC-G, be NC resident, demonstrate academic promise, and enroll full-time in Fall 2015. All applicants must complete the FAFSA. Essays must be submitted by a high school English teacher on behalf of students who write an essay on one of five topics for this year's competition book 1984 by George Orwell. LIFE Lessons Scholarship: Up to $10,000. For seniors who have deceased parent/guardian. In 500 words or less or a 3 minute video, please discuss how the death of your parent or guardian affected your life financially and emotionally. Be sure to describe how the loss of your parent/guardian impacted your college plans (e.g., your ability to afford college, attend the college of your choice, etc). Norah Morris Memorial Scholarship Endowment : For students entering college who have participated in equestrian activity. Applications available at www.nccf.org. Slomianyj Scholarship: For Subway employees or children of Subway employees who have worked at least 1,000 hours over the past 12 months. Students must have at least 2.0 GPA. Applications available online at: www.nccommunityfoundation.org. Applications must be received in the Chapel Hill office by April 13, 2015. Forgivable Education Loans for Service : Seniors planning to pursue a degree to work in North Carolina in areas with a critical need for more employees such as nursing, teaching, allied health fields, or medicine. Go to www.cfnc.org/FELS for a list of approved educational programs, eligible institutions, student eligibility requirements and annual loan amounts and limits. Applications must be received by April 1, 2015 National Co-op Scholarship Program : (must attend one of 7 universities listed on website - Johnson and Wales is a local one) www.co-op.edu. State Employees Association of NC: Is your mom or dad a state employee/retiree and a SEANC member? Are you a SEANC member? If so, you may be eligible to apply for a SEANC scholarship. Scholarships are awarded in the following categories: CATEGORY I: Financial Need CATEGORY II: Merit CATEGORY III: Member Only (working full time and enrolled in at least 6 semester hours of undergraduate work or 3 semester hours of graduate work) DEADLINE: SEANC scholarship applications are available from December to April each year. North Carolina Society of Accountants Scholarship: If you plan on a career in accounting, a $600 scholarship is available. Applications are in student services. Medical 180 Scholarship Program: $1,000. For high school seniors who plan to attend college in Fall, 2015 for at least 12 credit hours. Application Deadline: June 1, 2015 NC Strawberry Association Scholarship: The intent of this scholarship is to promote future leadership in the strawberry industry. The scholarship is open to high school seniors applying, accepted to, or currently enrolled in a land grant university, interested in or having declared a major in a program of study directly related to the strawberry industry (For example, small fruit production, marketing, food science, nutrition, entomology, agronomy, etc). Beverly Lake Scholarship Endowment: North Carolina high school graduates who are eligible for membership in the Sons of Confederate Veterans or the United Daughters of the Confederacy and pursuing a degree at an institution of higher learning. Norah Morris Memorial Scholarship Endowment: An individual entering college or continuing college education who has participated in equestrian activity. Slomianyj Scholarship Fund: Subway employees or children of Subway employees who have worked at least 1,000 hours over the last 12 months. ONGOING: The main scholarship search that we use is College Foundation of North Carolina at www.cfnc.org. This is an excellent website, which allows you to plan and apply for college, prepare for SAT/ACT tests, and find information on scholarship opportunities. You can also send your transcripts electronically to colleges though this website. Create an account today! There are many scholarships available for students planning to attend a community college in North Carolina. For more information on these opportunities, go to www.ncccs.cc.nc.us. Select the “student” tab at the top of the page and “scholarships” on the menu. Many websites provide financial aid and scholarship information. Go to http://www.scholarshipexperts.com for free information. Allow about 30 minutes to complete the information process.
