RESEARCH ACTIVITIES AND PUBLICATIONS:
CURRENT PROJECTS
1) Creativity and innovation in the pharmaceutical industry (with Giles Hirst, Daan van Knippenberg, and Markus
Baer)
In this project, we collected data from a multi-national pharmaceutical company in the UK, the US, and Sweden, in
order to investigate how, and under which conditions, transformational leadership relates to R&D scientists’ creative
performance and R&D team innovation. In particular, we examine whether competition and cross-group working
facilitates or hampers transformational leadership.
2) The effectiveness of organizational teams: A meta-analysis (with Jeremy Dawson and Michael West)
This study provides a statistical analysis of existing published and unpublished studies that examined the relationship
between team working in organizations and organizational effectiveness, including financial organizational outcome
variables, as well as indicators of employee well-being and satisfaction. In particular, we are looking at the conditions
organizations should implement in order to make team working effective, including HR-practices such as training and
support for team working.
3) The effects of equal or unequal group status, and competition or cooperation, on intergroup decision making
effectiveness (with Daan van Knippenberg, Wendy van Ginkel, and Anne Nederven-Pieterse)
This project is an experimental study with student groups that we jointly conducted at Erasmus University in the
Netherlands. We examined in particular the combined effects that competition or cooperation with respect to a
monetary bonus has on the effectiveness with which students performed on a simulated organizational decision making
task that we developed. Subject to whether groups found themselves in a numerical minority/majority, or had equal
group sizes, we expect different dynamics resulting in varying degrees of effectiveness. We are in particular interested
in identifying the strategies by which minority group members can influence the quality of joint decisions making.
4) The relationship between intergroup competition and longitudinal change in group effectiveness (with Michael
West, Claudia Sacramento, and Giles Hirst)
This study was conducted with almost 300 health care professionals working in 5 health care organizations throughout
the UK, where data was collected over a period of 10 months. In this paper we examine whether competition between
groups is good or bad for team performance. Further, we are looking at how health care teams can best manage
competitive relationships with other teams, in order to maximize their own team’s performance. A special focus is put
on the importance of interpersonal relationships and negotiation strategies between teams for maximizing team
effectiveness.
