Franz Boas and Pritzker Summer Scholars:
UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH GRANTS
Through the generosity of the Pritzker family and an anonymous donor, students may apply for funding of
any anthropological research, including research in the subfields of linguistics, archaeology, ethnology, and
biological anthropology. The Department of Anthropology will consider applications for support of three
types of full-time research-related activities:
1. Independent Research - Students work with an Anthropology faculty member to plan, conduct and
analyze results from a student-defined research topic.
application deadline: February 12th, 2008
awards announced: by March 14th, 2008
2. Faculty Mentored Research- Students work with an Anthropology faculty to plan, conduct and analyze
results from a student-defined research topic in that faculty’s area of research.
application deadline: February 12th, 2007
awards announced: by March 14th, 2008
3. Training – Student majors gain skills related to Anthropology in anticipation of applying those skills in
future research projects. Comparable training must not be available at Stanford.
application deadline: February 12th, 2008
awards announced: by March 14th, 2008
Usually these grants are awarded for field research conducted in the summer, but other schedules will be
considered.
The exact number of grants awarded will vary from year to year depending on the quality of applications
submitted and the funds available. Priority will be given to Independent and Faculty-Mentored Research
proposals. Pritzker Summer Scholars will receive a stipend of up to $1,000 and an additional amount for
round-trip transportation costs to the site. Franz Boas Summer Scholars will receive an amount to cover their
expenses, travel costs and a summer-earnings offset. (The committee will decide which type of grant each
student receives.)

period.
2. Students must also apply for a URO grant for the same research project

Description of Required Application Materials
The research proposal should describe the specific goal of the research and its relation to a larger
anthropological issue. It should outline the methodology of the project, plans for analysis, and the format for
writing up the research results. (For faculty mentored research, the student’s role in conducting and writing up
the research should be clearly explained.)
The training proposal should describe the training program and its relation to the student’s future educational
goals. It should indicate that the student explored possibilities for such training at Stanford, and it should
outline the form of the final report, such as a written paper or poster board for public display.
The itinerary should give a schedule with specific dates for travel and data collection (or training) and a
schedule with monthly goals for analysis and write-up. Generally, grant recipients spend 6 to 8 weeks in data
collection.
The list of contacts should list names and contact information for people at Stanford and at the site of data
collection who will be available for consultation and help (via e-mail, phone or in person) during the period of
data collection. (Indicate which of these people can serve as a local contact in case of emergency.)
The budget should itemize all expected expenses, such as for travel, room, board, research materials
(including photocopying), research assistance (including a translator), training program fees, etc. Students are
urged to look for inexpensive and safe alternatives. If expenses exceed available funding, students should
indicate where else they are applying for funds (e.g., URO or area study grants). NOTE: Students should
submit the SAME budget to Anthropology and other funding sources.
The description of qualifications should explain how past coursework, extra-curricular activities and/or
language abilities prepare the student to conduct this particular research project or training program.
