John F. Kennedy School of Government Research Appointments Fellow A practitioner or scholar who may conduct personal research, participate in non-credit teaching and other Center or School activities. The appointment may be stipendiary or non-stipendiary. Fellows are paid from object code 6450 and are not Harvard employees. Re-appointments beyond 5 years require a petition to the Secretary of the School. Research Fellow A practitioner or scholar who provides professional services in support of a well-defined, specific institutional objective under direction of one or more faculty members. The appointment may be stipendiary or non-stipendiary. Research fellows are paid from object code 6150 and are Harvard employees, eligible for health insurance and other limited benefits. First-time appointments must include an I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification form and tax forms. Reappointments beyond 5 years require a petition to the Secretary of the School. Visiting Scholar Non-Harvard faculty or research institute scholar (may be on paid leave) who pursues his or her own work in association with designated KSG faculty. Visiting Scholars may serve as principal investigators or project directors with the approval of the Academic Dean. The appointment may be stipendiary or non-stipendiary. Visiting scholars are paid from object code 6450 and are not Harvard employees. A Visiting Scholar appointment may be held for a maximum of 24 months. Faculty Research Fellow Harvard (non-KSG) faculty engaged in Center or School activities. A Faculty Research Fellow may serve as a principal investigator or project director. This appointment is renewable annually. Submit KSG form only Associate A practitioner or scholar who participates in individual and collaborative research with a Center or individual faculty member. This appointment is always unpaid. Re-appointments beyond 5 years require a petition to the Secretary of the School. Affiliate A courtesy affiliation with a Center. This is not an official Harvard appointment; an ID card is not provided. An Affiliate appointment is renewable annually. Submit KSG form only. Post-Doctoral Fellow An individual who has recently received a doctorate appointed to continue research under the supervision of one or more designated faculty. The appointment may be stipendiary or non-stipendiary. Post-doctoral Fellows are paid from object code 6450 and are not Harvard employees. Pre-Doctoral Fellow An appointment which provides affiliation with KSG research centers and programs for students who have not advanced to candidacy (course work not completed). Pre-Doctoral Fellows are paid from object code 6140 if they are Harvard students and from object code 6450 if they are non-Harvard students, or the appointment may be nonstipendiary.
