Introduction to Plastic Surgery for UCLA Third Year Medical Students The faculty, staff, and residents welcome you to Plastic Surgery. Before you start the rotation: 1. Please contact the Plastic Surgery Intern on Sunday before your rotation begins to find out when rounds will start and where you should report. 2. After rounds, students will be assigned to attend operations at UCLA (inpatient and outpatient cases) or the VA and to clinics for the week. 3. During the course of the day, you should have your portrait taken by staff photographer, Michelle Van Vliet, in the Plastic Surgery office (200 Medical Plaza, Suite 465-111). 1. Goals of the Clinical Rotation The goal of this rotation is to introduce you to the principles of Plastic Surgery. You will be incorporated into the UCLA Plastic Surgery team to learn about the evaluation and management of Plastic Surgery patients. By the end of the rotation, you should be familiar the general types of operations performed by Plastic Surgeons. You will also be aware of their indications, limitations, and risks. You will participate in outpatient office, outpatient surgery, and inpatient surgery settings. You will have contact with Plastic Surgery residents, fellows, and attendings. Although the plastic surgery patient population is diverse, each individual usually has only a single problem. Patients groups can be broadly classified as either cosmetic or reconstructive. You will be exposed to patients from both groups. You will participate in the care of patients with problems in the following areas: reconstruction of the face, eyes, nose, scalp, chest, extremities, and breasts; cosmetic enhancement of the face, breasts, abdomen, and extremities. The operations you observe encompass all aspects of plastic surgery: microsurgery, cosmetic, craniofacial, reconstructive, and hand surgery. 2. Outpatient Experience During the course of your rotation you will have the opportunity to attend the UCLA and VA Plastic Surgery clinics, the multidisciplinary Craniofacial clinic, and the Hand Surgery clinic. You will have opportunities to evaluate patients and orally present them to faculty. Presentations should focus on the chief complaint and its associated problems. Be sure to address them in both the HPI and PE component of your presentation. Many of the new patients that you evaluate will require surgery. Because all medical problems need to be addressed when planning for surgery, these should be incorporated as part of your presentation. Thus, comprehensive evaluations are necessary. 3. Operation Experience One half of your rotation will be spent in the inpatient and outpatient operating rooms. We want you to view as many different types of operations as possible. You can scrub for short periods or view operations without scrubbing. We want you to ask questions and understand the indications, advantages, disadvantages, and alternative treatments for each operation that you observe. You should also understand associated complications and the postoperative care that will be required for each procedure. We expect you to go to as many plastic surgery operating rooms as possible on your rotation day. The residents will direct you to the room locations. 4. Ground Rounds Plastic Surgery conferences are held on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 5:30 7:30 pm. On the second Tuesday of the month, it is held at the UCLA Faculty Club and includes dinner. On the fourth Tuesday, it is held at the Wadsworth VA, room 6400, 6S Wing.
