Plastic/Cosmetic Surgery: The Gateway to Perfection and Happiness? By Peyton Ceboll The average American women is 5’4’’ and weighs 140 pounds, has a B-cup breast size, and started developing wrinkles at age thirty-eight. The average American model or celebrity is 5’11’’, weighs 117 pounds, has a C-cup breast size, and manages to completely avoid getting any wrinkles. The average male celebrity possesses a six-pack while the average, everyday male does not. These famous beautiful people are not descendents of the Gods, but they have found their fountain of youth; plastic surgery. The media and fashion industry has decided for us what is beautiful, and what is pleasing to look at; so anyone who wants a successful career in these businesses has to have “the look” since the only responsibility asked of by this job is to be looked at. However, one does not have to be plastered on the television screen or on magazine covers to be attractive or have the desire to be attractive. Everyone on the entire planet, contrary to what they say otherwise wants to feel beautiful or handsome; and more often than not we are all cursed with features that we think are holding us back from achieving this goal of being loved, admired, and envied. There is a light at the end of the tunnel for the average woman and male, and that is plastic surgery. With the advanced science and medicine of today, doctors are available to alter almost any part of our body. There are breast augmentations, breast lifts, nipple augmentation, body lift, tummy tuck, liposuction, gynecomastia, nose reshaping, face lift, eye lid surgery, botox, deep microdermabrasion, chemical peels, scar revision, and hair treansplntation, just to name the more common procedures. We have the power to take our fate in our own hands and change how we look and how we were born. Cosmetic surgery allows us to control our own destiny and finally feel good and confident about ourselves. We all should be allowed to change our appearance since it is our own bodies that we have to live with forever and feel as if we could be the one gracing the runways. However, just because we can, the question is, should we? Plastic surgery is not a guarantee though, there have been many cases where things have gone horribly wrong, and can be life-threatening. Even if everything does go according to plan, the ending result might not be what you expected, and you might not think it fixed your problem or that it improved your appearance at all. Our imperfections are the things that make us stand out in the world, make us an entirely unique individual. Even though the media has told us what is beautiful, everyone still has their own opinion of what “good-looking” actually looks like. Your nose might seem big to you, but another might view it as a distinguishing feature that makes you the stunning person that you are. Plastic surgery can go border-line alien looking if your not careful and there is a point when it becomes too much and it’s obvious that you’ve had work done. Beauty is only skin deep and entirely up to interpretation, so we should embrace who we are as individuals; however, if you are truly and deeply unhappy with yourself and it’s a challenge to look at your reflection in the morning why not change? There is no law saying that we can’t, why is it considered a crime to change our bodies and attempt to stop the aging clock? But before you go changing yourself make sure you think about for a long time, because your changing who you are, and that’s a big decision. If you love yourself, others will love you as well, whether you keep your interesting features or cut it away with a knife.
