Georgetown Conservation Commission Meeting Minutes July 8, 2013 at 7 PM – Town Office Meeting called to order at 7:04 pm I. Quorum determined: Present were: Robin Moore* (Chair), Kate MacKay, Rosalie Paul, John Hagan*, Nancy Kinner*, Jay Holt*, Geoff Birdsall. Guest: Ruth Indrick of KELT. (*=Conservation Commission member). II. Minutes from June 10, 2013 meeting were approved, as presented. III. Project Updates Trails/Map – Robin/John. Coastal Clean-Up Dates- Jay: Jay will put an article in the Tide. Dates are September 14-15, 2013 UNH Water Project – Kate/Nancy. John got the new trail guide printed at The Copy Shop (Wiscasset). Kudos to John for his artistry and speed. The guide is excellent with color and slightly smaller font, but still readable. There are two new sites in the guide. The cost was $62.50 (GIS) and printing ($387.50). They will be at the Moorings, Coveside, the Country Store, Grey Havens, Robinhood Marina, Five Islands, Historical Society, KELT, Georgetown Pottery, and the Post Office. ACTION: Nancy will be sure the slides and reports are emailed to Mary McDonald. Project Canopy Grant – John, Kate, Robin. John and Kate met with the consulting forester on Friday, June 14 who did the site inventories of the two town-owned forest tracts. There will be an effort made to get people to the TH July 25 at 7PM in the GCC. CC members should contact people about this meeting. This meeting will get input from people on what they value about the two Town owned forests managed by the CC. The second community meeting for Project Canopy will be September 26th at 7PM at the GCC. The CC will present a plan for the management of the lands going forward. This plan will be based on the feedback from the first meeting and the forester’s report. ACTION: John and Robin will post signs at IPCAR and at the Country Store, Post Office, GHS, the Wharf, the Transfer Station, and GCC announcing the meeting. 1 Marsh Migration Team (MMT) and Sea Level Rise Project – Kate The Marsh Migration Team asked the Commission to identify some specific locations in Georgetown for them to focus on. The GHS wants to know the cemeteries at risk. Cape Swage is at risk and should be a focus. The MMT will contact the ME DOT about road information. KELT participated in a survey of culverts vis-a vis fish migration. Ruth will provide this information to the MMT. ACTION: John and Kate will construct an agenda for the August 20th meeting. There will be a state conference on Vulnerability Assessment Reporting in Wells in September. ACTION: Ruth will contact Kathy to see if she can go. Island Sustainability Committee (ISC) – Rosalie KELT Water Monitoring Project - Ruth o IV. IV. KELT water sampling started on Thursday, June 27th and will continue on alternate Thursdays through October. Sampling occurs around noon high tides for consistency and should take less than two hours. Volunteers were trained. Ruth has 8 volunteers as well as two KELT summer interns to do sampling. There was a glitch with the pH sampling paper. A $90 pH meter will be used instead. MACC-Kathy o The Commission set the date of the Harvest Potluck for Saturday, October 5th at 6 – 8 PM. There was a discussion of starting a seed bank. Jay will get clams. ACTION: Rosalie has asked Noah Keith-Hardy to be in touch with Robin about repairs for the cider press." No report as Kathy not present. Facebook Page and Marketing CC –Robin, Kate, John John has created a test WordPress site for the CC. Bob Doak does not know how to about what is involved in setting up a WordPress site. This topic will be discussed at a future meeting. The Conservation Commission may sell t-shirts to raise community awareness. The CC can do this, but cannot spend town funds for it. ACTION: Robin will work on the art design. Old Business The roadside cleanup will be done again next year. Discussion about how to encouraging recycling. Businesses can use the Transfer Station. This will be discussed at a future meeting. New Business: a. There was a discussion of the mosquito spraying and nutrient application to lawns. This will be continued at the next meeting. 2 b. Ruth reported KELT will be scheduling a meeting with in the next few months on septic systems and their impact on shellfish beds etc. V. Next Meeting: August 12, 2013 at 7 PM.
