NORTHWEST CHINA COUNCIL LANGUAGE CLASSES FALL 2008
The China Council is offering 10 weeks of Mandarin language classes this Fall. Classes are small (minimum of 4 and a maximum
of 12 students) and are taught by Willow Zheng, a native Mandarin speaker who has 10 years teaching experience in Mandarin as
2nd language. The classes are held in Portland at our office in Chinatown (Kida Bldg., 127 NW 3rd at Davis). Details are listed

Intermediate Mandarin for Business & Travel --- Mondays September 29 to December 1, 6:30-8:30 PM
Students with middle level experience speaking and reading Mandarin. Class will emphasize reading and conversational
skills. (Text: Teaching material on Business and Travel will be used)
Beginning Mandarin I--- Thursdays, October 2 to, December 11, 5:15 – 7:15 PM
Learn Chinese pinyin phonetic system, pronunciation and basic conversation; begin character recognition and writing.

Beginning Mandarin II-- Tuesdays, September 30 to, December 2, 7:20 – 9:20 PM

Students with middle level experience speaking and reading Mandarin. Class will emphasize reading and writing, and
expansion of conversational skills.
Text: Integrated Chinese, Level I, Part II; class starts with Lesson 15.
Intermediate Mandarin II -- Tuesdays, September 30 to December 2, 5:15 – 7:15 PM
For students who have completed the Integrated Chinese texts Level I Part II with middle level experience speaking and
reading Mandarin. Class will emphasize expansion of conversational skills, listening and reading comprehension and
vocabulary building. Class speaking is all in Mandarin.
Texts: Integrated Chinese, Level II. Class starts with Review lesson 7
Chinese traditional Painting and Calligraphy -- Fridays Sept 26 to Dec 12 (9/26, 10/3, 10/10, 10/24, 11/14, 11/21,
12/5, 12/12) Basic techniques of Chinese writing and painting, using the brush as an art form.
PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.
All classes unless otherwise noted are $175 (non-members $215*). Full payment is due before the first class.
* Cost includes $40 for a one-year individual China Council membership. Family membership is available at $45.
CANCELLATION POLICY**: Full refund, less $35 cancellation charge, up to and including the day after the first class session at 5
PM. No refunds thereafter. ** Beginner’s class only.
