Department of Clinical, Educational and Health Psychology Mindfulness–Based Approaches for Working with Children and Young People Who is it for? Professionals working in children’s services (including social care, education and health). The course is an approved UCL course which will count as such towards participants’ CPD requirements. What does it cover? Mindfulness is a particular way of paying attention to everyday experience. It forms the basis of an evidence based intervention (MBCT) recommended in the NICE guidance for depression. Evidence increasingly suggests mindfulness can also form part of universal, preventative interventions or be used to support targeted groups of vulnerable youngsters. Moreover, and perhaps most importantly, it can support positive well-being, including improved attention, concentration and resilience. This innovative course provides participants with: In-depth experience of a range of guided mindfulness practices, including a body scan, mindfulness of breath, sounds and thoughts and mindful movement Support to develop their own mindfulness practice and a CD/download for use at home Knowledge and understanding of mindfulness theory and mechanisms, and evidence from recent research into its uses and effectiveness Understanding of how to adapt mindfulness interventions for children with a focus on improving wellbeing, and the practicalities and pitfalls of developing programmes in schools A review of a range of programmes currently available and materials to deliver the recently developed Mindful Attention Programme (MAP) Competence in delivering a basic mindfulness intervention to children and young people and developing materials of their own Consideration of the need for continued development of home practice and appropriate supervision What is involved? Participants will be expected to undertake home practice of approximately 20 minutes duration, 4-5 times a week. In session, the guided mindful stretches and movement will require the participants to bring a yoga mat and to wear loose fitting clothing. Who is running it? Dr Suzi Iyadurai is a Chartered Educational Psychologist working in private practice, and an honorary lecturer and research advisor at UCL. She is a qualified yoga teacher and has practiced meditation for 35 years. She has followed the Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) training at Oxford Cognitive Therapy Centre and is also an experienced Cognitive Behavioural Therapist. Suzi has set up a whole school mindfulness project, involving direct work with children and staff training, which resulted in improvements in children’s attention and reductions in emotional symptoms and was very positively evaluated. Suzi has given presentations on mindfulness at the 2006 BABCP conference, to the BPS Wessex branch in 2007 and to a special interest group at the Maudsley Hospital in 2008. She currently runs yoga-based mindfulness groups, and integrates mindfulness into her CBT practice. Jeremy Morris is an Educational Psychologist and an accredited Cognitive Behaviour Therapist. He has been interested in Mindfulness and its applications for over 8 years, and alongside developing a personal practice, he has been using mindfulness with individual children in his therapy work. Jeremy gives a regular presentation on Mindfulness applications for children at the Anna Freud Centre and is currently testing a mindfulness programme he has developed for the prevention of depression as part of a larger Randomised Controlled Trial. He is particularly interested in defining and measuring mindfulness and has developed a questionnaire of the related construct of distraction as part of his current doctoral work at UCL. Dr Sandra Dunsmuir is Co-Director of the Doctorate in Educational and Child Psychology at UCL and is also a Joint Course Director on the UCL/Anna Freud Centre postgraduate courses in CBT for Children and Young People, teaching and supervising practitioners from a range of professional backgrounds on a regular basis. Sandra has had extensive experience working as an educational psychologist in four different local authorities and continues to practice on a regular basis with children, their families and teachers in delivering CBT interventions in school and community settings. Sandra has extended her interest in CBT to include Mindfulness based approaches, has followed a 10 week course and now integrates mindfulness into her practice. Sandra is involved in leading an exploratory trial of a depression preventive programme delivered to teenagers during school lessons comparing three interventions - CBT; CBT plus decision making and mindfulness. She has edited a Portfolio of Measures of Children’s Mental Health & Psychological Wellbeing. Further details The course runs for 8 weeks on Tuesday afternoons from 2pm – 5pm.
