Evaluation tools and probes considered

Evaluation Tools and Tests:

Phonetic awareness: check reading and show pictures and same word, similar word, rhyming word and compare after

 Word knowledge: “pyramids and palmtrees” – semantic knowledge test

Make up test of partial word knowledge and spoonerisms. Show them 6 words and ask if any are related and see why? Cannot use pictures for partial word match.

Options:

1. ADAT Auditory discrimination test (NferNelson) 3.4 to 5 years

Testing how they sound out words, repeating words, expressive skills, articulation.

Probably not very useful for us

2. Bracken Basic Concept scale revised (Psychological Corporation) 2.6 to 8

Receptive skills and comprehension of concepts and sentence structure. Quite fine changes in skill, that we would not expect changes from in 10 weeks. Possible beginning and end test

– CELF would cover some of this.

3. ** PIPA Preschool and primary inventory of phonological awareness

(Psychological Corporation) 3 to 7 years

Assessed phonological awareness skills; does not need strong verbal skills. Ideally need it for the baseline establishment and end testing. Plus may show progress also.

4. Understanding Ambiguity: An Assessment of Pragmatic Meaning (NferNelson)

8 -13 years

Mismatch of video and speech produced

– and see if spotted by child. Possibly of interest, but complex to administer and aimed at older age group. Could use with speaking children. Too advanced for this group.

5. ** CELF Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals (Harcourt Assessment)

5 to 21 years

Uses Receptive language subtests (linguistic concepts, basic concepts and sentence structure) and perhaps (maybe not) Word Structure subtest. Use at start and end. We

may have to repeat the same test or replace some items by re-ordering the pictures or substituting different animal names. Possibly using PIPA as interim probe. It seems that there may also be a phonological awareness subset of CELF included that we need to look at, and possibly word associations. (Does CELF cover spoonerisms?_

6. Phonological Assessment Battery: Standardised Edition (NferNelson) 6 – 14 years

6 tests - more advanced than PIPA, 40 minutes. Use for more advanced and speaking children, Use in combination with PIPA. Possibly use this for start and end, and PIPA for intermediate testing. Not needed if CELF covers these items.
