JOB DESCRIPTION Occupational Health Nurse POSITION Occupational Health Nurse LOCATION Nelson Tasman & Marlborough RESPONSIBLE TO Manager and/or Director, Nelson Nursing Service REPORTING TO Manager FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS Nelson Nursing Service Ltd Manager and Director Nelson Nursing Service colleagues & administration Staff Client company managers, Human Resource manager and employees Related Health Providers e.g. Nelson Radiology, Medlab/Southern Community Laboratories, ESR, General Practitioners Purpose The Occupational Health Nurse is a vital part of the Primary Health Care Nursing team. The role is underpinned by Public Health Strategy and is critical in assisting clients to protect the Health & Safety of all employees as relevant by the Health & Safety in Employment Legislation. The Occupational Health Nurse will: Provide a comprehensive range of employment related / occupational health / community nursing services in an effective, efficient, timely and professional manner to Nelson Nursing Service Ltd clients. Communicate both in writing and verbally, clearly and effectively with all clients and other relevant people and organisations Actively promote the occupational health services that Nelson Nursing Service Ltd can provide to new and prospective clients. Provide information, support and assist Employers to develop and maintain their health and safety practices, policies and procedures that reflect each organisations work environment, culture & values and Health and Safety legislation. Work collaboratively with the Nelson Nursing Service team to ensure the business remains profitable and provide services in a manner that reflect Nelson Nursing Services, Mission, Values and Philosophy. Person Specification Registered Nurse with at least 3 years post-registration experience in a Primary Health Care setting and / or equivalent. Flexible, adaptable, intuitive and concise with outstanding time management and organisational ability. Able to work and is compatible with a broad demographic of people, from factory floor worker to Chief Executive. Excellent ability to work autonomously. Outstanding verbal and written communication skills with legible handwriting and accurate spelling. Computer literate and able to use Word, Excel and Outlook confidently. Essential Qualification & Certification Is a Registered Nurse Holds a current Annual Practising Certificate issued by the New Zealand Nursing Council and maintain competency. Is a member of a relevant professional nursing organisation and holds professional indemnity insurance. Desirable Qualification & Certification Certified as competent against NZQA Urine Specimen collection and detection and quantitation of drugs of abuse in urine: Standard AS./NZ 4308:2008 Spirometry Competency Certificate or prepared to gain certification Audiometry / Hearing Conservation Certification Post Graduate Cert / Diploma in Occupational Health Independent Vaccinator Certification Key Responsibilities Promote, coordinate and provide occupational health assessments and services that meet the expectation and needs of Employers as well as assisting Employers to meet work place health and safety monitoring and Occupational Health and Safety legislative requirements. Monitor and identify health and safety issues and refer employees to relevant and appropriate providers. Communicate and report professionally, clearly and effectively with relevant people to ensure timely efficient and effective service provision, using all channels of communication. Maintain legible complete professional records, update procedures, prepare documentation and report on contracted work to meet each company’s operational, contractual, legal and financial requirements. Maintain relevant Occupational Health customer employee health records when requested and manage health monitoring recall systems. Monitor employee exposure to hazards including fumes and chemicals and provide advice as to avoiding exposure. Monitor and report equipment malfunction and maintain calibration and control confirmation, monitor and manage adequate consumable stock level, order stock reflecting demand and to prevent waste through expiry. Keep up to date with legal and professional changes associated with public health and occupational health and safety Comply with, Nelson Nursing Service’s and other legislative requirements including Health and Safety, by understanding the service and organisational policies and procedures and one’s own obligations when carrying out tasks with clients. Work within and support the Nelson Nursing Service multidisciplinary teams by participating in other community nursing roles e.g. home support, wound care, ACC assessments Initiate, participate and represent Nelson Nursing Service Ltd in a professional capacity at internal and external meetings, training and other consultative gatherings. Represent, promote and market the services available from Nelson Nursing Service Occupational Health Service to prospective clients Assist with other nursing duties to ensure demand for care and support is well managed and undertake any other tasks and duties when and as requested. Notes: 1. On-going professional development is an expected requirement of this role. If not currently the holder of a Post Graduate Occupational or other Health qualification the incumbent nurse will be expected to work towards commencement of such qualification within 2 years of commencing work at Nelson Nursing Service. 2. This role requires the Occupational Health Nurse to undertake On Call duties as part of the overnight / weekend / public holiday On-Call roster - shared between all Registered Nurses at Nelson Nursing Service.
