The Art of Acting and Creating
The Michael Chekhov Technique in Practice
A European Training Programme
Module II:
The Space of Creativity
Creative Individuality – Atmosphere – Play
22 - 27 August 2011, Groznjan, Croatia
In the creative process we are looking for a balance between focus and
inspiration.
Wild inspiration is useless unless it finds a focus. At the same time too much
focus and restriction to the options can kill the inspiration. The balance is
delicate. We will try to find out how much personal space is needed to find this
balance. Improvisations will help us examine our sense of playfulness and we
will explore the precise actions we can take on the path of creativity.
Furthermore we will explore the space and the world of a given play. What
happens when we really dive into the writer’s world and allow ourselves to be
surprised by its specific dynamics, energy, language and space?
Michael Chekhov’s concepts of “Atmosphere” (“the soul of every piece of art”)
and “The Sense of Ease, Form, Beauty and the Whole” (“the four brothers”)
will guide us through this exploration.
We will work on
● Focus ● Space ● Objective and Personal Atmosphere ● Playfulness ● Higher
Self ● Feeling of Ease ● Feeling of Form ● Feeling of Beauty ● Feeling of the
Whole ● Improvisation and Text
Please be prepared to learn some text from a play. The play and selected
scenes will be announced ca.3 weeks before the workshop starts.
