Prof. dr. sc. Nikoleta Radionov, president Organizing Committee INTRANSLAW Zagreb 2015 University of Zagreb Faculty of Law, Full Professor Croatian Academy of Legal Sciences, Secretary-General nikoleta.radionov@pravo.hr Zagreb, July 15th 2014 Subject: 1st International Transport & Insurance Conference – INTRANSLAW Zagreb 2015 – project elaboration The transport industry in Croatia and the South-East Europe is facing numerous challenges, some of which are caused by the fact that Croatia recently joined the EU, and thus became part of its legal system. We are all witnessing that the complexity of the EU transport acquis causes difficulties in understanding and implementation of the harmonised national legislation, which is then not only time-consuming but also costly if misinterpreted. Transport industry is one of the pillars of Croatian economy – it is considered vital for economic recovery through attracting foreign investments, as well as its impact on competitiveness. In parallel, Croatia's geographic position on the key transport corridors (V and X), which are the part of the TEN, increases the interest in the substantial and continuous SEE cooperation. It would ensure coordinated approach in creating adequate regional transport infrastructure and implementation of EU transport strategies, based on common priorities and agreeing on the immediate and long-term needs. In this respect, the Croatian experiences gained through accession period and a year old EU membership are crucial to both national and regional stakeholders. The transport and insurance industry, as well as judiciary, science, public administration and financial sector would therefore, in our opinion, all approfit from a specialized transport & insurance forum that we are about to organize, that would enable knowledge transfer and foster integration and synergy between different parts of the professional audience. In the long-term perspective, enhanced cooperation in transport policy development would lead to improved strategic framework (emphasis on the regional cooperation), enhancing understanding of the legislative basis and promoting its efficient implementation, that will in turn improve the overall transport industry and have positive effect on the competitiveness of the economies of the region.
